INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS INTERESTED IN GRADUATE PROGRAMS IN NURSING

We welcome applications from qualified international applicants who meet the academic entrance requirements for our graduate programs.

EQUIVALENCE OF PREVIOUS DEGREES

All applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree in Nursing from a university program which is equivalent to an accredited program in Canada. In addition, applicants to the PhD program must hold a master’s degree in Nursing or a related field from an accredited university program. Program equivalence will be assessed by the Graduate Programs Admissions Committee assesses using documents provided by the applicant and/or other available information. Because this can take additional time, international applicants are advised to begin the application process approximately 12 months in advance of the anticipated program start date.

PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH

Landed immigrants and international applicants to the graduate programs in Nursing (i.e. MScN, MN, PhD), whose first language is not English, are required to provide evidence of English proficiency prior to admission in one of the following ways:

  1. TOEFL Paper Based: minimum total score of 600 and minimum score of 5/6 on the Test of Written English (TWE)
  2. TOELF Computer Based: minimum total score of 250 and minimum score of 5/6 on the Test of Written English;
  3. TOEFL Internet Based: minimum score of 100, with no score less than 23 on each of the 4 skill categories
  4. English Language Testing System (IELTS): minimum score of 7 on the overall test and on each subcomponent
  5. Culture Works Program: Successful completion of the High Advanced (Level 4)

Students must make their own arrangements to write the TOEFL or IELTS to have the official results sent directly to the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by the testing agency at the time of application to the program. Scores are valid if taken within 2 years of application to the program. If test scores are older than 2 years, a new test must be written and passed before admission will be considered.

Students may contact the Culture Works program for a free assessment of the English fluency and determination of the lengths of program which is recommended. Applicants are responsible for the costs of this program.

Students whose first language is not English may be exempt from providing English Proficiency test scores if they have studied academic courses on a full-time basis for at least 2 years in an English-speaking university located in a country whose official first language is English. While we reserve the right to require evidence of English proficiency from any applicant whose first language is not English, French Canadians do not typically need to provide an English Proficiency score. However, it is expected that they are bilingual.

PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS AND LICENSURE

International students enrolled in the MScN and PhD programs are not required to hold registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), provided that they are currently qualified to practice Nursing in their own country. Potential students must provide this information when they apply to the program. Students who do not hold a CNO license will not be permitted to enroll in courses which include a clinical practice component or to supervise oundergraduate students in clinical practice.

All applicants to the MN program must hold a valid CNO license and meet the requirement of 2 years clinical practice experience (see admissions requirements).
