One more CRC renewed

November 24, 2010

The Government of Canada awarded a prestigious Canada Research Chair to one researcher in the Faculty of Health Sciences at The University of Western Ontario and renewed the term of another on Wednesday. Kinesiology professor Kevin Shoemaker was awarded a new Tier 1 Chair in Integrative Physiology of Exercise and Health, while Physical Therapy's Trevor Birmingham had his Tier 2 Chair in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation renewed.

Kevin ShoemakerAs a Tier 1 Chairholder Shoemaker will receive $200,000 annually for seven years to fund his research into the impact of vascular disease and exercise on blood flow to nerves involved in movement. This research is particularly relevant to the health and mobility of aging populations as it deals with a common problem behind many chronic diseases that affect one’s ability to move freely.

“Evidence of the broad benefits of exercise for health – and the mechanisms by which these benefits are provided – will improve our methods of disease prevention and treatment, and enhance the provision of physical exercise throughout our lifespan as a treatment that complements current clinical practice,” Shoemaker says.

Trevor BirminghamBirmingham has held his Tier 2 Chair since 2005 and will receive $100,000 annually for five years to continue his investigation of clinical and biomechanical measures to investigate musculoskeletal rehabilitation. The development of new strategies to improve joint and muscle function will lead to reduced physical disability and decreased social burden caused by musculoskeletal conditions.

"Musculoskeletal conditions are common, costly and disabling," says Birmingham. "Their impact is huge – robbing us of our mobility and costing Canada more than $20 billion annually.”

His research takes place largely in the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic and the Wolf Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory.
