The School of Kinesiology started as a small academic unit within the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1948, and gradually expanded to have Department status within the Faculty of Social Science. In 1972, it became the Faculty of Kinesiology, a status it retained until it was amalgamated with the Faculties of Nursing and Applied Health Sciences in 1997 to become one of five Schools in the new Faculty of Health Sciences. From a graduating class of 3 in 1950 to an undergraduate student body of over 1,300 in 1999, from an original faculty and staff complement of 4 to now more than 100, from hopes of a graduate program to a full program of 91 graduate students, including 42 PhD students, Western Kinesiology has grown to become one of the most distinguished Schools in its field in North America. By selecting Western, you are choosing one of Canada's largest and most recognized centres of athletic and academic excellence. Kinesiology offers you the program opportunities and physical resources available only at a major university. At Western, Kinesiology offers you the best of everything. Three and four-year (Honors) Bachelor of Arts degree programs as well as a four-year Bachelor of Science in Honors Kinesiology are available. Choose a sociocultural or biosciences focus leading to a four year Bachelor of Arts or Science (Honors Kinesiology) degree. Stay more general with our three-year Bachelor of Arts, or combine disciplines with a program in the arts and humanities, or one from science. While Western is big enough to offer almost any program you can think of, it is not too big that you'll get lost in the shuffle. In the School of Kinesiology, almost all of our courses are taught by faculty members and most are supplemented by small group, laboratory, and tutorial experiences. There are plenty of opportunities for one-on-one contact with students, professors counsellors, and teaching assistants. Western has committed teachers to help you grasp challenging concepts. Most of your instructors will be active researchers, with the most current scientific knowledge at their fingertips. Their research activities keep them excited about their subject, and that kind of enthusiasm is contagious! Class sizes range from several hundred in some first year courses to less than 30 in senior courses, seminars, and directed study. In large courses, hands-on laboratory work and small group tutorials reinforce the learning experience and deepen your understanding. Professors are available to answer your questions on a regular basis. Make a point to visit your professors during office hours--they are there for you, and want to help you make a smooth transition to first year university study. Western's Student Development Centre, especially the First Year Programs Office, can also help with courses on study skills, exam writing, and time and stress management. Many of Canada's top athletes choose Western. A number of our student-athletes combine their interests with a degree program in Kinesiology. Others choose from a wide range of program opportunities in the arts, sciences, and social sciences, or from one of our many professional schools and faculties. As a student-athlete, Western offers you one of Canada's largest varsity sport programs. Few universities can match Western's record of achievement in athletic competition, or its diversity of recreational offerings. Ask us to send you more information about Athletics and Campus Recreation.
