Course Selection

  • What is a prerequisite?
    Courses which must be taken prior to enrolling in a course.
  • What is a corequisite?
    Courses which must be taken at the same time as another course.  Corequisites may also be taken as prerequisites.
  • What is an antirequisite?
    Courses whose content overlaps too much to allow credit for both.   
  • Do I need at least one course from each Category?
    Yes, you do.  1.0 from each of Categories A, B, and C.  Health Sciences courses are listed under Category A and Biology courses are listed under Category C.  The Category B courses as those in the arts and humanities.  You may also combine your essay course with your category B course if you wish. 
  • Can you repeat a course?
    Yes; both marks are on your record but only the second mark counts.  Students who wish to repeat a course for a third time must see their faculty academic counsellor for permission.  Courses which are passed on the first attempt may not be repeated for a third time.
  • What is the maximum number of first-year courses allowed?
    7.0 first year courses (number 001-1999) may be taken for credit towards your degree.  "Extra" first year courses may be taken but will not count for credit towards your degree requirements.  Senior courses are those at the 2000-level or above.
  • What are designated essay courses?  Do they have to be taken at Western?
    E, F, or G are designated essay courses and they must be taken at Western.  E is a full-year essay course while F and G are half courses (F is offered in the first term while G is offered in the second term).  All students must have successfully completed 2.0 essay courses with 1.0 at the senior-level (2000-4999) in their program of study.   There are courses which may have essay content but do not have an essay designation so they may not be counted towards the essay requirement.
  • How many courses can you take in the same subject?
    No more than 2.0 in your first year.  For a 3-year degree, no more than 9.0 while for 4-year degree it is no more than 14.0 (with the exception of Psychology).
  • How many courses can you take in each term?
    5.0 courses per term.  You should ensure you have a balanced course load as well.
  • How many courses can you take at an affiliated university college?
    Only 1.0 per year may be taken at either Brescia, Huron, or King's unless you are taking a minor at one of these.  If you are taking a minor at an affiliated university college, you may take a maximum of 2.0 courses in one of the years.  Courses taken at an affiliate cannot be offered on main campus.
  • How many courses do you have to take to be eligible for the Dean's Honor List?
    Students who have completed at least 4.0 courses in the current year and earn an average of at least 80% (and no failed courses) are eligible for the Dean's Honor List.
  • What is the grading system?  What do I need to pass?
    All grades below 50% are considered failed grades.
