Seminars are considered informal or formal meetings between faculty, colleagues, and peers who all share a common interest or wish to learn about a new area. These seminars are considered key forums that promote communication and collaboration amongst academics and researchers. The HRS program offers numerous seminar opportunities throughout the academic year including speaker presentations, Doctoral student public lectures, journal club, discussion forums, or student lead workshops. Several fields within the HRS program offer seminars or other discussion groups on a regular basis (see list with schedules attached). In addition, Amber Trent sends email notices at least weekly about seminars, open meetings and other talks that are hosted by members of the HRS program. In addition, to the numerous opportunities within HRS, there are also many seminars and talks held within the Faculty of Health Sciences, in other Faculties located across campus, and/or at our affiliate research institutions (Lawson and Robarts). Two specific opportunities I wanted to bring to your attention and recommend you put in your calendar and plan to attend and participate are: All students in the HRS program are expected to attend ‘seminars’ as part of their program requirements. Normally, students are required to attend a minimum of 5 seminars/year that are outside of the student’s field. These seminars can be selected from not those offered within as well as outside the HRS program. What seminars each student is required to attend depends on where you are in your program of study and the field in which you are conducting your graduate degree. Several fields require that students within that field attend field specific seminars during one or more of their years of enrollment (check with the field leader for your field and/or the HRS program website for specific progression requirements of each field). Successful completion of this program milestone will be documented using the attached form. In order to complete the attached form, students will need to keep track of the seminars they attend and note key experiences/reflections when they occur. The milestone will be marked completed on the student’s transcript after the student submits this form and provides a brief written account/reflection about their seminar experiences that occurred throughout the year. This documentation will normally be provided by the student at the time the annual advisory committee report is submitted to the HRS program office (May 31st). Continuing students, who began the program prior to September 2010 start likely, have fulfilled seminar requirements by successfully completing seminar courses that were offered in 2009/2010 academic year or earlier. As of September 2010 there are no longer seminars courses, rather, the seminar experience will be reflected as a completed milestone. As a program milestone, students are still required to attend certain seminars (depending on field requirements). However, these seminars are no longer listed with course numbers and students are no longer required to register for the course. SEMINARS IN THE HRS PROGRAM
