This field offers graduate training for individuals interested in research related to optimizing Physical Therapy practice. Research in this field comprises investigations that are dedicated to understanding the mechanisms underlying physical mobility with a focus on contributing to either basic knowledge or the elements of physical therapy practice, which includes assessment, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, outcome measurement, and risk and prevention. New knowledge generated by these types of studies allow a person with physical limitations to achieve maximum function following injury and/or prevent secondary conditions associated with aging and/or chronic disease and disability. Research training is offered to individuals from a variety of disciplines in a number of diverse topics related to Physical Therapy including: Aging, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Child Health, Exercise Physiology, Motor Control and Neurosciences, Professionalism, Knowledge Translation and Continuing Competency, Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, Therapeutic Modalities, and Wound Management. The Physical Therapy field offers a concurrent degree combining the professional Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) with a doctoral degree (PhD). Admission to the combined MPT-PhD program is limited to students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada as of the application deadline. The MPT-PhD program is a 5 year program during which students are enrolled as full-time PhD students. The format for completion of the combined degree is two years of full-time study as a PhD student, followed by two years of full-time study as an MPT student, and ending with one year of full-time study as a PhD student.
