Classes for Seniors with Hearing Loss
We regularly offer classes for seniors who have hearing loss. These adult aural rehabilitation classes focus on understanding your hearing loss, strategies for better communication, and getting the most out of assistive technology. Audiologists and audiology students work with small groups of seniors in one of two courses.
Course One: Hearing Loss & Strategies for Improving Communication
In this six-session program you will learn about:

Assistive devices II: Telephone & alerting devices

Improving your communication II: Using effective communication strategies
Course Two: An Introduction to Speechreading
What is speechreading?
A method of communication in which the person perceived what is being said by watching the lip, tongue, and jaw movements of the speaker, in addition to observing the speaker’s facial expression and body language. The focus is primarily on the speaker’s lips. – The Centre for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing at new river Community College, Dublin, Virginia.
In this six session program you will learn about:

What is speechreading?

What the sounds of English look like on the mouth.

What sounds are easiest and what sound are most difficult to see on the mouth.

How body language & facial expressions contribute to understanding messages.
- How you can use context to help you understand when you do not hear all of the message.
