CIHR Funded Research
We have developed a Nutrition & Exercise Lifestyle Intervention Program (NELIP) for pregnant and post-partum women. We also offer a culturally sensitive NELIP for Aboriginal women with the aim of preventing diabetes, as the rate of diabetes in this population is 3-5 times the national average.
What is NELIP?
NELIP is a controlled nutrition and walking program that:
- Prevents excessive weight gain.
- Helps regulate the mother’s blood sugar.
- May reduce the risk of gestational diabetes.
Through NELIP we hope to prevent excessive weight gain during pregnancy and prevent gestational diabetes in overweight pregnant women, by helping them make healthy lifestyle choices regarding nutrition and exercise.
