"Disability and Primary Care: Accessibility and Quality Care"
Presenters: Mary Ann McColl, PhD
MTS Centre for Health Services & Policy Research, Queen’s University
February 2, 2011

Abstract:

Over the past 10 years, researchers at the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research at Queen’s University, in collaboration with colleagues at the Centre for Studies in Primary Care and the School of Rehabilitation Therapy, have undertaken a series of about 20 studies, aimed at understanding and improving accessibility and quality of primary care for people with disabilities.

Studies range from large national epidemiological studies to qualitative explorations of the experiences of family physicians with their disabled patients. The presentation will review the work conducted to date, with an emphasis on implications for Ontario and for Family Health Teams. Recently the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (2005) has released the first of five standards, requiring private and public sector organizations, including primary care, to ensure equitable access to disabled Ontarians.

The presentation concludes with several tools aimed at assisting family physicians and primary care organizations to comply with legislative expectations.
