Moira Stewart, Ph.D.

Director of the Centre for Studies in
Family Medicine

She was recently named the Dr. Brian W. Gilbert Canada Research Chair in Primary Health Care. Her 25 year research program on patient-centred communication is internationally recognized. She also conducts health services research and translates new knowledge into practice.

 

 

JUDITH BELLE BROWN Ph.D.

She conducts research in the areas of patient-doctor communication, physician well-being and women's health. She is known nationally and internationally for her workshops on the patient- centred clinical method and qualitative research methods.

STEWART HARRIS
M.D., MPH, FCFP, FACPM

He conducts research in the area of caring for populations at special risk with a focus on the cause and prevention of Type II diabetes in First Nations communities. Other research areas include prevention in family practice and the role of family physicians in the Canadian Health Care system. He HOLDS the prestigious Ian McWhinney Chair in Family Medicine Studies.

CAROL HERBERT

She as a pioneer in developing services for sexually abused children and co-founded the Sexual Assault Service for Vancouver. She is internationally known for her leadership in primary care research, and for her work in clinical health promotion, patient-physician decision-making, participatory action research with aboriginal communities focused on diabetes and on environmental effects on human health. She is recognized leader in inter-professional education and collaborative practice, women's health and mentorship of academic women.

GRAHAM REID, Ph.D.

Research focuses: psychosocial problems in young children, the development of brief parenting interventions as well as psychosocial issues in medical populations (e.g.,transition from pediatric to adult health care, research on the children’s mental health system).

JOSHUA SHADD, M.D., CCFP

Dr. Shadd is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine with a clinical and research focus in palliative care. His particular interest is in primary palliative care – supporting the formal and informal caregivers who make it possible for people to spend their last days at home.

AMANDA TERRY, Ph.D.

Dr. Terry is a health services researcher focusing on primary health care, electronic medical records, and health policy. Specifically, her areas of research include electronic medical record adoption, use, and data quality. She is also a Scientist with the System Integration and Innovation Research Network of the Applied Health Research Network Initiative of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

AMARDEEP THIND M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Thind is a head and neck surgeon with a Ph.D. in Health Services Research. His research focuses on access to care for vulnerable populations, and program evaluation. Within this broad rubric, he has examined barriers to care for women and children, systems issues, and the economic implications of systems change.

Dr. McWhinney is one of the founders of academic Family Medicine. He continues his work on the theory of medicine as well as pursuing his research interests in home care and the co-ordination of health services.

   

BRIDGET L. RYAN, Ph.D.

 

Epidemiology & Biostatistics

Dr. Ryan’s research interests include adolescent primary health care; patient-centred care; and the analysis of large datasets. Her studies include an analysis of the Canadian Community Health Survey examining adolescent family physician utilization; an evaluation of a program integrating family physicians into acute home care; and the development of measures of health care provider patient-centredness.
