Biostatistical Support Unit
The Biostatistical Support Unit (BSU) is a statistical consulting service focused on design and analysis of health research studies and clinical trials. It is based in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Since its inception in 1987, the BSU has provided methodological assistance to hundreds of researchers from various disciplines in the medical sciences (both basic science and clinical) and is fully qualified to provide assistance in the statistical aspects of research including study design, sample size estimation, data analysis, and the reporting of statistical results. We also assist with the development or review of the methodological aspects of protocols and manuscript preparation. As well as assisting clients from within Western, the BSU has been involved in projects outside of the university community.
The BSU is fully qualified to provide assistance with:
o Study design
o Sample size estimation
o Statistical aspects of protocol development
o Data analysis
o Interpretation of statistical results
o Reporting of statistical results
o Statistical review of manuscripts
Depending on the resources required by the researcher, the BSU will either advise on, or take a collaborative role in the project.
