Research Profiles
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is dedicated to the expert application and teaching of epidemiological and health services research methods, and to the discovery of new research methods, to improve population health.
Educational Programs
Our department is approved by the Ontario College of Graduate Studies (OCGS) to offer MSc and PhD degrees in the fields of: Biostatistics; Clinical Epidemiology; Health Services Research; Population Epidemiology. We also offer a Collaborative Program in Biostatistics with the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences, a Certificate Program and an undergraduate course in the BMSc program.
Research Programs
Our department boasts a thriving research environment. Our faculty epidemiologists have externally funded (predominantly CIHR or SSHRC) research programs in specific health areas of interests and are expert in the application of a number of health and health research methods. Our faculty biostatisticians have externally funded (NSERC) research programs directed towards the development of new methods applicable to health and health services research.

1. a CIHR operaing grant "Econometric Analyses of Adult Obesity in Canada: Modifiable Risk Factors and Policy Implications."
2. An MOH Career Scientis Award "Understanding the Impact of Practice Settings on Physician Behaviour and Patient Outcomes: The Implications for Health and Human Resources Planning".
April 2009 - Dr. Yun-Hee Choi who has been awarded an NSERC Discovery Grant from the Fall 2008 competition titled "Modeling Correlated Survival Data in Genetic and Biomedical Research"
March 2009 - Dr. Dan Hackam who has been awarded two new grants; 1) PSI Foundation Clinical Research Grant titled "Statins and Renovascular Disease", and 2) CIHR Knowlege Synthesis Grant titled "Closing Care Gaps in Cardiovascular Medicine"
February 2009 - Dr. Mark Speechley who has been awarded two new grants; 1) a CIHR "Genetics (Ethics, Law and Society) award, and, 2) CIHR "Operating Grant" from the Fall 2008 competitions.
February 2009 - Dr. Bin Xieand Dr. Greg Zaric who have been awarded an Academic Development Fund "New Research and Scholarly Initiatives Award" from the Fall 2008 competition.
February 2009 - Winners of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research of Aging prize for meritorious article: 1) Sue Muir, PhD student, "Use of the Berg Balance Scale for predicting multiple falls in community-dwelling elderly people: a prospective study" and 2) Dawn Gill, PhD student, "The Phone-FITT: A Brief Physical Activity Interview for Older Adults".
October 2008 - Dr. Sisira Sarma and Dr. Amardeep Thind, who have been awarded a SSHRC "Internal Research Award" titled Physician Supply at the Intensive Margin: The Case of Canadian Family Physicians
