 What is Ecosystem Health??

A systematic approach to the preventative, diagnostic, and prognostic aspects of ecosystem management, and to the understanding of relationships between ecosystem health and human health. It seeks to understand and optimize the intrinsic capacity of an ecosystem for self-renewal while meeting reasonable human goals. It encompasses the role of societal values, attitudes and goals in shaping our conception of health at human and ecosystem scales. (Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, UWO)

About 20 students and faculty gathered for a two day workshop at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph this past March.  The topic of discussion was problems and solutions for the protection of ecosystem health in case of widespread outbreaks of Prion diseases such as Scrapie, BSE, and CWD. Along with several information sessions the workshop included a trip to a local sheep farm to experience the issues firsthand.
