The GES sponsors many events throughout the year, from parties to professionalization sessions. In addition to the recurring events listed here, there are also any number of special events that will be organized by the GES co-chairs and executive. Of course, the graduate program also enjoys an active social life external to the GES-organized functions; however, what follows is a sample of the official events that graduate students in the English Department organize each year.
To help ease the transition into a new program, new grad students in English can be paired up with a "Grad Buddy," a continuing student who can share the wisdom he or she has gleaned while a student at UWO and help out with making the adjustment to life in London. In September, the GES hosts a Grad Buddy Meet and Greet, a chance to meet your grad buddy as well as many other students, new and old, in the English program.

The GES booksale is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Every fall, the GES solicits donations of used books from students and faculty, and tries to clean out the many books that live in the Anti-Lounge Study and Resource Room. Members of the university community at large come by and find new things to read, and we earn a bit of money to fund subsequent events throughout the year.

Our department is full of amazingly talented people, and every so often we get together on a Saturday afternoon to share those talents with each other. Performers play, sing, read, recite or do any other entertaining thing they can think of! Often held at a local pub, these coffeehouses give students a chance to meet up and enjoy good music, good food, and good company outside of the confines of University College.

Each year before the winter break, students and faculty come together to eat, drink, and be merry and celebrate another semester's end.

"Tea with Profs" gives students a chance to share tea, goodies, and some informal discussion while a faculty member shares some of his or her favourite poetry or literature.

GES Mock Conferences offer graduate students a collegial environment in which to practice giving and receiving feedback on conference paper presentations; they also foster communication and community among students with diverse interests in areas of specialization. Organized along the lines of a panel at an academic conference, mock conferences simulate the conference experience by allowing students to read short (20 minute) papers in front of an audience, including a faculty moderator.

Organized by the faculty Graduate Placement and Development Coordinator, these sessions offer students a chance to learn important skills toward developing their career. Addressing topics from writing conference papers and applying for grants to preparing to go on the job market, these regular seminars provide a wealth of information for all graduate students. Check the current schedule for more details, or contact the current GDP Coordinator, Mary Helen McMurran.
