My research and teaching focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century American literature and culture, with an emphasis on the modernist period. Other areas of interest include the history of the novel, narrative theory, pragmatism, psychology and literature, and theories of emotion. I am currently writing a book on psychological and aesthetic responses to the experience of surprise in transatlantic modernism.
