THE ROSE IN THE HEART.



GRANT me one wish, O heart, I cried,
    Give me a rose each day of the year.
“How can that be?” my heart replied,
    “Roses bloom not when thoughts are sere;
Roses bloom not in the autumnal moods,

Nor in the soul’s bleak solitudes,
         Nor yet in a restless springtime storm;
         But give me a nature fair and warm,
And a tender, June-sweet atmosphere,
