A large number of entrance or admission scholarships are
available to outstanding scholars entering first year. For many, the
nomination process is initiated by the student's secondary school.
For others, awards are determined, without application by the student,
by UWO administration following receipt of all student records. A bursary is a non-repayable award; all applicants must be
full-time students and must show genuine financial need. Again, please

based awards that are available to students in the Department of Earth
Sciences. Students are required to complete and submit the Financial

Services Site by October 31st. 1. The Robert and Ruth Lumsden Undergraduate Awards in Earth Sciences
Awarded to full-time students in the Department of Earth
Sciences on the basis of financial need and academic achievement. 2. Robert and Ruth Lumsden Undergraduate Awards in Science
Awarded annually to students in the Faculty of Science on the
basis of financial need and academic achievement (mimimum B+ average).
These awards were made possible by a bequest to Foundation Western by
the late Ruth V. Lumsden (BA '79) and Robert O. Lumsden (BA '78).
Value: 12 Up to $,1000 each. 3. Friends of the Gardens Bursaries
Available to any student who demonstrates financial need and
who is progressing satisfactorily. Preference will be given to a
student in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, or Environmental
Sciences. Established by Friends of the Garden, a dedicated group of
volunteers committed to enhancing the beauty of The University of
Western Ontario campus. Value: $1000 each, number will vary based on
funds available annually. The following bursary and scholarships require students to submit
applications directly to the Department of Earth Sciences. 1. The Robert W. Hodder Travel Bursaries
Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in the
Department of Earth Sciences in the Faculty of Science, or full-time
graduate students enrolled in the Geology or Geophysics graduate
program in the School of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, on the
basis of financial need, to enable them to participate in graduate or
undergraduate student field trips and workshops in the geology of
mineral deposits. 2. The J.P. Bickell Foundation Mining Scholarship Program
Available to candidates in Engineering and Earth Sciences based on either of the following criteria: 3. Geophysics Travel Scholarship
Awarded to students who are travelling to scientific
conferences that are related to their thesis research. The scholarship
is available to undergraduate students in an Honors Specialization in
Geophysics and to full-time students registered in the School of
Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies and enrolled in the Graduate
Program in Geophysics. Students must have an average of 78% or higher.
The following merit-based awards are
specific to students in the Department of Earth Sciences. Recipients
are nominated by the Undergraduate Committee in consultation with the
Undergraduate Chair;
no applications by students are required. Unless specified, all
require that the student obtain an "A" average in the full complement
of courses defined for the program. 1. The Charles A. Southworth Memorial in Paleontology
One award annually of a book. Awarded to either an
undergraduate or a graduate at the discretion of the Department. Spring
nomination. Named in honour of Charles Southworth (1880-1968), amateur fossil collector of Thedford, Ontario.
One award annually of a one year membership in the GAC and the
student's choice of a GAC publication. Awarded to the top academic
student currently in their second last year of a geologically oriented
program (e.g., geology, geophysics, geological engineering). 3. Mineralogical Association of Canada Prize
One award annually of a one-year membership to MAC and a Short
Course Handbook or Special Issue publication. Awarded to a student at
the end of 2nd year or higher. Student must demonstrate excellence in
one of the specialties supported by the MAC, which are mineralogy,
crystallography, geochemistry, petrology or mineral deposits. 4. The Robert and Ruth Lumsden Scholarships in Science
Awarded to students entering the second, third or fourth
year in any program in the Faculty of Science with at least one
scholarship reserved for students in the Department of Earth Sciences. 5. The Gordon Dixon Memorial Prize
One award annually of a book. Awarded to a graduating student
who has demonstrated interest and proficiency in Pleistocene geology. 6. The Dr. Harvey Hunter Memorial Award
One award of $375 to a 2nd year student who has the highest
marks in the Earth Sciences courses and who enters the 3rd year of an
honors Geology program. Endowed by donations in memory of Dr. Harvey Hunter, post-doctoral fellow in the former Department of Geology from 1974-77, who died in a swimming accident in Africa in 1978. 7. CSPG (Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists) Undergraduate Award
One award annually of a framed, personalized certificate and
a one-year membership in the Society. Included is as well a $50
prize. 8. Geological Association of Canada Student Internship Award
Three awards annually of trips to the GAC-MAC Annual
Meeting; one field trip. Awarded to 3rd year students currently
registered in a Geology major program administered by the department;
they will be rated for their academic achievement, personality,
maturity and ambition. 9. CSPG (Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists) Student-Industry Field Trip Award (SIFT).
One award annually of a ten day field trip in Alberta. Awarded
to a third year student demonstrating strong interest in sedimentary
geology. 10. Charles Carmichael Prize in Earth Sciences
Awarded to the geophysics student who achieves the highest
standing in Earth Sciences 4490E. This prize was established by a
generous donation from the family of Charles Carmichael in recognition of his eminent career as Professor of Geophysics at The University of Western Ontario. Value: 1 @ $300 11. Geophysics Scholarship for Excellence
Awarded to a student who has a minimum average of 80%,
entering second year of an Honors Specialization or Professional Program
in Geophysics (preferred) or a double Major in an Honors degree which
includes Geophysics, offered by the Department of Earth Sciences. 12. Caradocian Prize in Geochemistry
Awarded to a graduating fourth-year student who has achieved
the highest aggregate standing in any two of: a) Earth Science 4431 a/b
(Isotope Geochemistry in Earth and Environmental Science), b) Earth
Science 4432a/b (Mineral Deposit Geochemistry), c) Earth Science
4440a/b (Physical and Chemical Hydrogeology), d) Earth Science 4444
a/b (Hazardous Mine Wastes), or equivalent courses that replace these
with the progress of time. 13. A. Mark Turner Memorial Scholarship in Geology
Awarded to a full-time student in 3rd year Earth Sciences,
specializing in Geology, based on academic achievement (minimum 80%
average). The recipient will be selected by the Scholarship and Awards
Committee in the Faculty of Science/Earth Sciences Department. This
award was established by Mr. Randy Turner in memory of his father, A.
Mark Turner, who received his degree in Geology from Western (B.Sc.
1950). Value: $4,625.00. 14. Aleksis Dreimanis Prize Awarded annually to the student in the Department of Earth
Sciences achieving the highest marks of the third year class who returns
to complete an Honors Specialization in Geology (preferred) or a double
Major in an Honors degree which includes Geology. Established in honour
of the late Dr. Aleksis Dreimanis, geology professor at Western from 1948-2011. Value: $700 15. Norman B. Keevil Award in Earth Sciences Awarded to a full-time student entering third year of an
Honors Specialization, Major, or Specialization offered by the
Department of Earth Sciences who is in the top quarter of the program
and who demonstrates a long-term interest in the discipline of
Geophysics or Geology through academic or extra-curricular activities.
The award will be continuing for two years provided the student remains
in an earth sciences program and continues to be in the top quarter of
the program. Established by Teck Corporation in honour of Dr. Norman B.
Keevil, Chairman of the Board. Value: $1500 biennially, continuing for up to two years. The following awards and scholarships
are available, but not specific to, students in the Department of
Earth Sciences at UWO (students from other universities/colleges may
also apply). Applications, transcripts and reference letters are
submitted directly by the student. Students will recieve notification
of upcoming deadlines and available application forms as they are
received by the department. Notices will also be posted on the
Undergraduate bulletin board and in the department newsletter "Down to
Earth".
Awards for outstanding Master's and Bachelor's Theses in
Earth Sciences. To be eligible, subject matter should be relevant to
Ontario Sedimentary geology/ geophysics or to the theory of
hydrocarbon exploration and production. A complete bound copy of the
thesis must be submitted to the OPI Thesis Awards Committee. Awards of
$300 will be presented at the OPI Conference in November. Spring
deadline.
Scholarships of $1000+ to students pursuing a college degree
program directly related to or bearing a reasonable relationship to the
science of oil, gas, or other mineral formation evaluation.
Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, career
objectives and financial need. Spring deadline.
Mining, metallurgy, geology, geophysics, geological
engineering, or related studies in earth sciences. Awarded annually to
an undergraduate student who is registered in third or fourth year of
any of the above accredited programs at a qualified Canadian
university and who has attained average marks of 85% or higher.
Amount: $1,000. Application deadline: June 4
Mining engineering, geology or geological engineering,
mineral processing and metallurgical engineering, or other applied earth
science programs. Awarded annually to undergraduate students who can
demonstrate financial need and who are enrolled in an accredited
mining related program in a Canadian university. This bursary can be
continued through re-application providing the scholar maintains good
academic standing and the need prevails.
Awarded annually to an undergraduate student who has
attained the highest academic average on completion of third year in an
accredited geophysics program at a qualified Canadian university.
Amount: $1,000. Application deadline: June 4
Awarded to to undergraduate students with a stong interest
in a career in the mining industry. The scholarships are available to
students attending any university in Canada following a program in
geology, mining or metallurgy, or any other discipline related to the
mining industry.
Several awards annually of paid travel expenses. Students
must be a GSA member or student member. Students must also be registered
for the GSA Annual Meeting, complete the Section Travel Grant
Application form and complete the expense estimate and faculty
certification form (available in July) by the September deadline.
Several awards annually of money for student's research.
Applicant must be an undergraduate student associate of the GSA. If
awarded a grant the applicant will submit to the NC-GSA a short
summary report upon completion of the project. The NC-Section strongly
encourages that the results of funded research be reported at
NC-Section annual meetings as well. September deadline.
Students must be enrolled at a Canadian university in an
academic program leading to an exploration geophysics career in
industry, teaching or research. Scholarships are awarded on the basis
of academic performance, financial need, interest in geophysics and
extra-curricular activities.
Students must be pursuing a degree in geophysics or a
closely related field. In addition, qualified applicants will possess an
interest in and a strong aptitide for physics, mathematics, and

For all candidates registered in second year of any program in
Earth Sciences, the minimum academic requirement is 75% overall
average in first year courses. For all candidates registered in third

in Earth Sciences, the minimum academic requirement is a 75%
cumulative average from all courses designated as principal courses.

Application forms and deadline information can be obtained
from the Academic Program Coordinator of the Department of Earth
Sciences. Recipients will be selected by a committee of three consisting
of the Faculty member responsible for teaching undergraduate courses
in mineral deposits - Geology; the Chair of the Department of Earth
Sciences; and, the Outside Advisor to the Student Chapter of the
Society of Economic Geologists.
Financial Aid Services will determine financial need for
undergraduate candidates, and the Department of Earth Sciences will
determine financial need for graduate candidates. Established through
Foundation Western. Value: 9 at a minimum of $300 up to a maximum of
$500 each (award amounts will be determined based on field trip
selection).
Note: Undergraduate students applying for the Hodder Travel Bursary must complete a Financial Assistance Profile application on the Student Services Site.
1) Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in any year
beyond year one who have expressed an interest in mining and are
enrolled in one of the following programs: Chemical Engineering,
Biochemical and Environmental Engineering, Civil and Environmental
Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering. Candidates must have
achieved a minimum 70% average, and recipients will be selected by a
committee in Engineering based on academic achievement. Applicants
must provide a brief essay (maximum 250 words) describing their
interest in mining by September 30 to the Faculty of Engineering.
2) Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in any year
beyond year one who have expressed an interest in mining and are
enrolled in a field course in one of the following programs: Geology,
Geophysics or Geology and Environmental Science. Candidates must have
achieved a 70% average, and recipients will be selected by a committee
in Earth Sciences based on academic achievement. Applicants must
provide a brief essay (maximum 250 words) describing their interest in
mining by January 15 to the Department of Earth Sciences in the
Faculty of Science.
Value: The value of each scholarship is a minimum $2,000 and
the number available annually will vary depending on the pool of
eligible applicants. Approximately $35,000 is available annually, and
successful recipients will share this amount equally. Engineering and
Earth Sciences are eligible to select an equal number of recipients.
However, if eligible candidates cannot be found in Engineering, unused
funds will be directed to select additional recipients in Earth
Sciences. Conversely, if eligible candidates cannot be found in Earth
Sciences, unused funds will be directed to select additional
recipients in Engineering.
The selection committee shall consist of the Chair of Earth
Sciences plus two Geophysics faculty appointed by the Chair for a
one-year term on a rotating basis. Apply to the Chair by October 31
each year. Academic standing is the principal criterion in the
selection of successful candidates. Any one student will be limited to
one travel scholarship per MSc program and two for the PhD program.
However, at the discretion of the Selection Committee, a student may
be awarded one additional scholarship, provided that it does not deny
an award to another qualified applicant who has received fewer
Geophysics travel scholarships. Up to three travel scholarships of
$550 each year.

Awarded to a third or fourth year student from each Canadian
University. The student is chosen by his/her professors for outstanding
performance in petroleum geology, or the related fields of
stratigraphy, sedimentology, paleontology and structural geology.
No applications are necessary; a slate of nominees will be submitted to GAC by the Department.
The award will be continuing provided the student remains in
the program and maintains at least an 80% average. Reversion will be
at the discretion of the Department. Value: 1 @ $2,000 annually for
three years.
The Prize winner will have obtained a minimum aggregate standing
of 80% or higher in the two courses used to determine his or her
eligibility. The recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Science
in consultation with the Department of Earth Sciences. Value: $500 External Awards and Scholarships
CSPG Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists
Two $1250.00 scholarships open to all undergraduates
enrolled in an accredited Earth Sciences program at a Canadian
University who are in thier second or third year. Applicants will be

Canadian citizenship or Permanent Resident status. Spring deadline.

The Women's Association of the Mining Industry of Canada Annual Award
The Wood Bursary
Sophia and John Marsh Wood were a prospecting team working in
northern Canada. Mrs. Sophia Wood was a member of The Women's
Association of the Mining Industry of Canada Toronto from 1973 to
1984. In 1985, Mrs. Wood bequeathed a large portion of her estate to
the association, enabling the foundation to give annual bursaries in

Canadian Mineral Industry Education Foundation (CMIEF) Scholarships
The scholarships are normally awarded to those entering the
second year of a university program but first-year students have also
been selected. Successful recipients recieve $1000 per academic term
until the degree program is complete, provided that satisfactory
academic performance is maintained and that work experience in the
mining industry is obtained between academic terms with reports to be
