French Immersion Week for Adults

August 11-17, 2013

Would you like to speak French more easily, and with greater confidence? Western University''s summer program for adults lets you take a significant step toward your goal in just one week. Improve your vocabulary and pronunciation, enjoy the opportunity to practice your speaking skills in the company of other adults at your level of French ability, get your mind into "French mode" again, and have a good time too!

WHAT LEVEL OF FRENCH IS REQUIRED?
Applicants to the program should have reached at least the low-intermediate level of study in French. In other words, you should be able to converse in sentences - perhaps with some hesitations and errors - about everyday topics such as a trip you have taken, your family or your work. If you are unsure of your level, just give us a call for assistance.

Participants will be grouped with others at a similar level of ability, from low intermediate to advanced.

THE IMMERSION ADVANTAGE
Join our French Immersion Week and improve your French communication skills while "living the language" - getting to know the people of Trois-Pistoles and discovering the many attractions of the lower St. Lawrence.

Western has long been a leader in adult immersion programs. Its French Immersion School, offering five-week degree-credit courses in Trois-Pistoles, is the oldest and most distinguished program of its kind in Canada. Over eighty  years ago, the University chose to locate the School in Trois-Pistoles because of the town's charm, intimate size and hospitality, and for it's 100% francophone environment. These advantages are still strongly in evidence today. The French Immersion Week is designed to make the benefits of the School more accessible to adults with active family and professional lives.

STIMULATING PROGRAM
The week will begin with a welcome reception and orientation on Sunday evening.  Daily classes will be held Monday through Saturday. Last year, the schedule featured: three hours of morning classes devoted to general language skills and vocabulary building for everyday communication, one-hour afternoon conversation groups, pronunciation classes, cultural outings,  participation in late afternoon and evening activities such as sports, films, musical entertainment and theatre, and special activities including the opportunity to meet townspeople by joining them in their leisure pursuits.  There is an optional full-afternoon whale-watching excursion (weather permitting) and an optional dinner at a local gourmet restaurant (not included in the fee).  The program provides a Certificate of Completion upon finishing the week.

FRIENDLY HOMESTAY
Accommodation and meals are provided by specially selected hosts who welcome you into their home and help you build your skills for everyday informal communication. Your program fee covers lodging from the night of the recommended Sunday arrival date through to the following Sunday morning, and meals from lunch on the first Sunday to breakfast on the day of departure.

A DYNAMIC TEAM
The French Immersion Week is conducted under the leadership of André Beaudin, Director of the École de langue française de Trois-Pistoles. M. Beaudin has extensive experience as an instructor at the School and elsewhere. He has held senior administrative positions at the University of Laval and his education includes Doctoral Studies, a Masters in Teaching of a Second Language from St. Michael’s College, Winooski, Vermont and a BA in Second Language Teaching, University of Laval.

The instructors are dynamic, well-qualified and experienced native speakers of French. Dynamic Francophone facilitators organize cultural activities, outings, sports and help you to get to know Trois-Pistoles.
