Call for Presentations & Papers

The 2008 CAUCE Conference Planning Committee invites proposals for concurrent sessions on university-community engagement that correspond with the following three conference tracks:

University-Community Engagement in Teaching & Learning

University-Community Engagement in Research

University-Community Engagement in Administration


University-Community Engagement in Teaching & Learning

University-community engagement in teaching & learning occurs when faculty blend sound pedagogy with the needs of their communities.  Potential topics for discussion within this track include the following:

  • Civic engagement through curriculum-based service learning
  • Program development that successfully meets local community needs
  • Models for extending the university to underserved areas of the community
  • Initiatives to engage diverse learners (e.g. newcomers to Canada)
  • Engaging distance education learners through new technologies

University-Community Engagement in Research

University-community engagement in research occurs when researchers undertake studies whose findings will be of direct benefit to the public outside the walls of the university.  Potential topics for discussion within this track include the following:

  • The evolving role of applied research
  • Strategies for integrating research and outreach
  • Strategies for demonstrating value through outreach
  • Developing scholarship in the field of outreach education
  • Methods and suggestions for evaluating engagement efforts

University-Community Engagement in Administration

University-community engagement in administration occurs when faculty and staff transcend their assigned work-related duties to provide service in the community.  Potential topics for discussion within this track include the following:

  • The role that faculty and staff play in engagement
  • The administration’s role in creating a culture that supports engagement
  • Leadership styles that foster engagement
  • Strategies for fostering faculty appreciation for outreach
  • Opportunities and implications of physically relocating continuing education units to urban centres
