International and Exchange Student Centre

Western Student Services Building - IESCInternational students at Western can take advantage of the International and Exchange Student Centre's (IESC) offerings - a full range of services and programs specifically tailored to meet the needs of international students and enhance their academic, social, and cultural experience at the university, including:

  • International Student Pre-Arrival Guide - an online guide to assist students beginning their "Western" journey
  • Reception and orientation service to assist and support newly arrived international students with questions about settling in
  • Peer Guide Program, providing friendly support and assistance with cultural and transition issues
  • Year-round social, cultural and informative events
  • Individual assistance with Canadian immigration and employment regulations, financial, cultural, social and personal concerns
  • English Conversation Program for students (and spouses) who want to enhance spoken English skills
  • International Student Work Opportunities Program (ISWOP) - On-campus work study opportunities
  • Volunteer opportunities to gain valuable experience in a cross-cultural setting

Indigenous Services

Indigenous Services is pleased to offer a variety of services and programs designed to assist Indigenous students in succeeding at Western. Services are housed in the Learning Resource Centre which offers an up to date computer lab exclusively for Indigenous students, a job board, a quiet study area, and an archival collection of more than 1,200 books (available in Weldon Library), as well as a variety of other academic, research, and informational needs resources. Services include a Visiting Elder Program, a Cultural/Personal Counsellor, and administrative support to serve as liaison between students, the University and Indigenous communities.

Outreach and Recruitment Services provides presentations to high schools and community agencies/groups. Also, youth are offered three different summer camps, as well as ongoing sport and academic activities in partnership with the faculties. The new Indigenous Services-Health Sciences and Sciences Access/Transition Program offers student intensive, academic, and personal supports centered on a general first and second-year academic program.


PrideWestern

PrideWestern is a University Students' Council service dedicated to supporting and celebrating gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual,two-spirited, intersex, asexual, queer, questioning students, and their allies at The University of Western Ontario. Run entirely by students, PrideWestern organizes speakers, support, and events such as its weekly Thursday night Coffeehouse at the Spoke, and Sunday matinee at Western Film.

PrideWestern also oversees The Pride Library housed in Weldon Library, which includes books, periodicals, videos, slides, and CDs, amounting to over 5,500 titles.


Services for Students with Disabilities

Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) assists students who have ongoing conditions or challenges that may include: chronic illnesses, chronic pain, attention deficit disorders, learning disabilities, psychiatric disorders, and vision, hearing or mobility impairments. Students with disabilities can find help accessing locations, services, technology and information at the University. Academic accommodation can also be arranged.

SSD offers the Adaptive Computing Technology Centre located on the 4th floor of the Western Student Services Building and the Access Lab and Learning Opportunities Lab located in the Weldon Library. You may set up a meeting with a counsellor to discuss possible arrangements the University can make in order to accommodate your needs.
