Training Suggestions Based on Work Environment

The CCAA offers more than 15 different training courses, workshops and conferences in the field of physical activity and aging. Selecting the best learning opportunity is a key decision to make, and often a challenging one. This tool can help make the decision easier by listing the opportunities by the work environments they are applicable to.

  Community Programs

Ball Workshop for Fitness Leaders (Ball)     

A 2-hour hands-on workshop. All participants will receive a ball with their registration fee. You will learn to include small balls in your functional mobility programs for both high functioning and lower functioning lower adults.


Balls, Bands, & Balance (BBB)     

A 3-hour hands-on workshop. All participants will receive a ball in their registration fee and will learn how to include small balls and bands into older adult fitness programs.


Functional Activity Measures (FAM)     

Using a combination of lectures, labs, demonstrations, and active participation, participants will gain skills and knowledge in conducting functional fitness assessments of older adult fitness parameters.


Functional Exercise for Dementia (FE4D)     

In this workshop participants will learn to maximize functional outcomes in dementia and Alzheimer clients by leading effective exercise programs within a variety of settings.


Functional Fitness for Falls Prevention (FFFP)     

Contribute to decreasing fall rates among senior care facilities in Ontario by learning to assess residents’ functional mobility levels and design, implement and evaluate functional fitness programs for residents.


Functional Fitness for Older Adults (FFOA)    

Designed for staff working in long-term care facilities, retirement residences and adult day program leaders who want to learn how to instruct appropriate physical activities for residents/clients.


Get Fit for Active Living (GFAL), GFAL-Diabetes, Facilitator Training    

An 8-week education and exercise program designed to introduce older adults to the benefits of an active lifestyle. A facilitator training course and adults with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes course is also offered.


Home Support Exercise Program (HSEP), Facilitator Training     

An evidence-based in-home exercise program designed to enhance and maintain functional fitness, mobility, balance and independence. A facilitator training course is also offered.


Physical Activity Advocacy Workshop (PAA)     

This 4-hour workshop teaches health promoters to evaluate and identify quality activity programs, and link older adults with these programs in their communities.


Post-Rehab Exercise for Stroke (PRES)     

On completion of this 6-hour workshop you will be able to offer a community-based exercise program for stroke survivors.


Seniors Fitness Instructor Course (SFIC)   

A 36-hour certification program for anyone (older adults, young adults, and volunteers) who wants to learn how to design and lead effective fitness classes for seniors. A 16-hour fast-track training courses is also offered.


Tiered Exercise Program (TEP), TEP Facilitator Training     

Three evidence-based, 10-exercise physical activity programs for older adults who are either chair-bound, have transfer ability, or are ambulatory
