Seniors' Fitness Instructor Course (SFIC)
The SFIC was developed by academic researchers and experts in the field to address a need for training and information about appropriate physical activity programs for older adults. This course meets the International Curriculum Guidelines for Preparing Physical Activity Instructors of Older Adults recognized by International Coalition for Aging and Physical Activity (ICAPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO)
Standard Course Length: 4 days, Prerequisite(s): None.
Fast Track Course Length: 16 hours; Prerequisite(s): Background in fitness or health science.
- Effects of aging and the benefits of physical activity for older adults
- Class design and exercise techniques
- Leadership skills
- Exercise principles for individuals with special conditions (i.e. arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and more)
Who Should Take SFIC?
- Older adults, young adults, and volunteers who want to learn how to design and lead effective fitness classes for older adults.
Certification and Renewal
- To become a certified Seniors’ Fitness Instructor, five criteria must be met within one year of the completion date of the SFIC. Learn more about SFIC Certification.
