Tiered Exercise Program Stakeholder Meeting

Stakeholder meeting

Many older adults do not have access to exercise programs appropriate for their mobility levels. Frail and isolated older adults are espcially underserviced when it comes to activity programs to enhance mobility. The CCAA has developed an evidence-based, multi-level, PREPARED exercise program for older adults with a variety of mobility challenges. The program is ready to implement and includes an assessment tool to determine the most appropriate level for each individual. At the stakeholder meeting the CCAA will present details of the new Tiered Exercise Program for older adults with low mobility.

About the Tiered Exercise Program

In 1996, the Home Support Exercise Program (HSEP) was developed to address the need for exercise programs for homebound older adults. The HSEP aims to improve the functional fitness, mobility, and independence of frail, older adults by regularly engaging them in a program comprised of ten simple, yet progressive exercises. The HSEP promotes aging in place, by enhancing and maintaining older adults' ability to perform activities of daily living such as independent toileting, and moving around the home without assistance.

Recently, the CCAA expanded the HSEP and developed new tiers to better accomodate the variety of mobility levels found in homebound older adults

  • Level 1 - For Chair Bound Participants
  • Level 2 - For Those with Transfer Ability
  • Level 3 - For Ambulatory Participants

Along with the tiered exercise programs, the CCAA has compiled simple and concrete criteria to designate participants into one of the three levels based on their functional fitness. The goal of this criteria is to make it easy for care providers, personal support workers, and volunteers assisting older adults to decide which level of exercise is appropriate for their client. An escalating level scale, with three being the most advanced, allows participants to work at the appropriate level to avoid injury and promote progression.

Why get involved?

This is an effective, evidence-based, multi-level, PREPARED exercise program for homebound older adults with mobility challenge. The program is ready to implement and includes an assessment tool to determine the most appropriate level for each individual.

How to get involved?

At the stakeholder meeting the CCAA will present details of the new Tiered Exercise Program for older adults with low mobility. Stakeholders and partners will have the opportunity to state desired levels of participation in the project. Choices will include program implementation, involvement in the refinement and/or evaluation process, and full program partnership.
