Western has a long history of excellence in materials research and numerous infrastructure facilities that support this work. We also benefit from strong industry partnerships. About 50 research groups participate as members of CAMBR. Our goal is to strengthen our internal and external partnerships, facilitate access to infrastructure for both our members as well as external partners and users, and to develop a cohesive and strategic vision for materials and biomaterials research at Western.

Materials and biomaterials research naturally transcends traditional departmental and faculty boundaries. Our core competencies extend from the synthesis of new materials to the analysis and characterization of natural and synthetic materials using a wide range of techniques. Our experimental work is supported by computational expertise for modelling the function and failure of materials. Furthermore, we benefit from expertise in cell culture, pre-clinical and clinical models, and biomedical imaging to explore the interactions of biological systems with materials.
