ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION
Honors Specialization

The popularity of fossils and dinosaurs has encouraged many people to wonder about life in the distant past. Do you ever try to imagine the far future? Two hundred million years ago there were no birds and few mammals or flowering plants. What might evolution have in store for planet Earth millions of years in the future? Will there still be birds or will fish, perhaps, take their turn learning to fly? What about humans? Will we still be here in a few million years? What will be our lasting impact on the planet?

Predicting the future requires an appreciation of the past and present. In the Ecology and Evolution program you will develop a sound understanding of how the diversity, distribution and interaction of Earth’s stunning variety of microbial, animal and plant life forms change over time – from one day to the next and one eon to the next. Courses will be devoted to studying the life histories, growth and behavioral characteristics, habitat and various interactions among members of the same, and different, species in ecosystems ranging from the desert to the deep ocean. You will also consider the ecology and evolution of our own species and may expand your program with courses in geography, environmental science or biological anthropology for example.

The Ecology and Evolution specialized honors degree module from the UWO Department of Biology is a wide ranging, integrative module that develops skills in field research, various laboratory analyses, statistical methods, use of a research library and oral presentation.

Consultation with the chair of the Honors Specialization in Ecology and Evolution, Dr. Bryan Neff, is advised prior to registration in your third year.
