COURSE OUTLINE
Note:
This course has no assigned textbook. Required reading material will be announced during lectures and, if possible, will be placed on reserve in the library or online links will be provided.

The lecture will introduce you to major concepts and questions in genetics. Specific emphasis will be placed on linking genetic questions to the type of approaches which are typically used to solve them. We will start with introductory lectures showing the principles, advantages and disadvantage of major techniques. We will be looking at the complexity of genetic questions in relationship to genetic variation and the impact of environmental factors on genetic analyses. And we will use examples such as the generation and analysis of "knockouts" to see how geneticists ask questions, illustrate the many ways they have developed to answer them and discuss why we need more then one way to answer questions.

The tutorials will assist by analyzing specific genetic questions and by introducing you to reading of primary literature articles. Assignments will be handed out in tutorials and are due the following week unless specified otherwise.
