The Environmental Sciences Western Field station is located on a new University owned 33 ha. farm site about 13 km. to the north. This site has become a unique inter and multidisciplinary research station for the Faculty of Science with this department one of the major users. Present users from this department include Dr Cavers (weed research), Dr Maun (ecology) Dr Orloci (ecological modelling studies), Dr Phipps (Crataegus systematics), Dr Walden (molecular and classical genetics of corn). Other research at the station includes radioastronomy (Physics Dept.), soil fertility (Engineering Science), geochemistry (Earth Sciences and Chemistry) and arboriculture (Sherwood Fox Arboretum). The land has been fenced and tiled and an irrigation pond has been prepared. Facilities include a 232m2 building housing an ecology laboratory, a genetics laboratory, and two storage buildings. This facility is staffed by a field station manager and assistant and is equipped with medium and small sized tractors, tillers, rotovator, spray equipment, irrigation equipment and typical small farm tillage equipment.
