Teaching Statement

My general teaching interests lie in cell biology and biochemistry. The primary goal in teaching for me is to prepare undergraduate and graduate students for successful careers in Life Sciences, Biomedicine, and Biotechnology. As a main part of my duties, I am teaching two lab only courses Biology 3326F/G (Cell Biology Laboratory) and Biology 3625F/G (Techniques in Physiology and Biochemistry, Plant Module). I also serve as an advisor for 4 th year undergraduate students conducting independent research projects (Biology 4999E). In the past, I taught several lecture courses such as Cell Biology (Biology 282b), Advanced Medical Cell Biology (Anatomy and Cell Biology 429a), and Immunology ( Microbiology & Immunology 3300A).

Research Statement

Carbohydrate recognition is an essential topic of glycobiology, cancer biology and innate immunity. The main focus of my research is to understand the role of plant and animal lectins (carbohydrate-binding proteins) and their ligands including complex carbohydrates (LPS, chitin, some oligosacharides) as biological response modifiers. The additional areas of my research interests and expertise include cancer biology, redox-regulation of intercellular contacts, lymphangiogenesis, and intramolecular dynamics of lectins.
