Research Experience
Current Position
- Since September 2004 Marie-Curie Fellow
of the European Union with the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario (Prof. Norman Huner) and the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology, Golm, Germany (Prof. Mark Stitt). The current work aims to understand the ecosystem functioning of conifer forests using an integrated approach of molecular, biochemical and physiological methods in the new field of Global Change Molecular Plant Physiology
Previous Positions
- 2001 - 2004 Postdoc position at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biogeochemistry, Jena, Germany . I was working on ecosystem-climate interactions in boreal forests, with a special focus on (i) regulation of seasonal patterns in photosynthesis, (ii) light use efficiency, and (iii) partitioning and quenching of excitation energy during light and cold temperature stress
- 1999 - 2000 Research assistant at the Department of Botany, University of Jena, Germany. Research in algal physiology and the use of algae to monitor water quality
Research activities abroad
- November 2001 – August 2003 Several visits at the Umeå Plant Science Center, Umeå, Sweden (Prof. Gunnar Öquist). Worked on light and cold temperatures as regulators of photosynthesis (total of 4 month in Umeå)
- January 2001 – August 2003 Several experimental field campaigns in the Krasnoyarsk area/Central Siberia to assess mechanisms of photosynthetic adjustment in boreal pine (total of 6 month)
- April – October 1995 Visiting scientist at the Institute for Marine Research INVEMAR, Santa Marta, Colombia. Fieldwork within the activities of the mangrove restoration project ProCienaga at the Cíenaga Grande de Santa Marta, Columbia (7 month)
- August – September 1994 Fieldwork in Burkina Faso, West Africa within a project sponsored by the German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) "Evaluation of land use systems in zones of ecological risk and favor"; responsibility for digital cartography (8 weeks)
- September – October 1993 Studies in Nepal for the Department of Geography, Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen, Germany (6 weeks)
Professional experience
- 2000 – 2001 Freelance writer for the editorial office of the online-journal “Bild der Wissenschaft”. Author of newsletters in lifescience.
- July 2000 Consultant for Ökologische Produkte Altmark Inc., Klötze, Germany. Strategic identification of microalgal key species for biotechnological applications.
- October 1999 Organization and planning of the workshop UV-B and Global Change - Chlorophyll-fluorescence and primary production of marine macroalgae in collaboration with Prof. Dieter Hanelt, Helgoland
- 1997 - 1998 Consultant for Geospace Inc., Jena. Conceptualization and realization of a GIS-application for the monitoring of biotopes
- May – August 1994 Internship, German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ), Department of Indonesia and Malaysia, Eschborn, Germany. Management and editorial of project databases
- March – May 1994 Internship, German Aerospace Center (DLR), Department of Remote Sensing, Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. Digital imaging and referencing of satellite data
- July – August 1992 Internship, Institute for Environmental Analytics and Geotechnique (UEG), Wetzlar, field sampling, sample preparation, analysis of water and soil samples
