Research Facilities and Groups

Research at the Rotman Institute takes an interdisciplinary approach, bringing together philosophers and scientists to focus on theoretical issues and their practical and ethical implications in areas of science from cosmology to conservation ecology, evolutionary biology, and medicine. We are currently collaborating on projects with a number of partner organizations, such as the University of Western Ontario’s Centre for Human Immunology, which studies the immune system and how it mediates our health in the context of infections, inflammation and chronic diseases. Our members are also working with the leading experts in clinical trials at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute to discuss the obstacles to obtaining ethics approval for cluster randomized trials.
The CulturePlex does research on the several phases of cultural dynamics: creation, transmission, and representation. The different academic perspectives of our researchers —from philosophy to mathematics, computer science, economics, philology, and art history— provide us with a varied toolbox that we use to select, develop and tailor the most appropriate solution for the problem at hand.
Doing research on cultural complexity means three things: analyzing the same phenomena at several scales (from the individual's to the network's), employing a multidisciplinary approach, and taking advantage of the available computing power.
The Artlab Gallery is a purpose-built exhibition space designed to showcase contemporary and historical works of art. Located at the North end of the John Labatt Visual Arts Centre, the gallery is a square room situated within a cylindrical external structure. It is approximately 1600 square feet in size, with 30 foot high ceilings and has programmable track lighting for variable usage.
The Artlab program is focused on projects that involve and/or respond to student and faculty research and practice. A Steering Committee meets on a regular basis to develop a slate of exhibitions and projects that represent the breadth of department interests. Each year approximately twelve projects are presented, showcasing a range of production that includes all mediums.
The Centre for the Study of Theory and Criticism is an established forum for interdisciplinary research and advanced study into theoretical problems and practices.
Research at the Centre focuses on the work of such movements as Deconstruction, Social and Political Thought, Contintental Philosophy, Psychoanalysis, Visual Culture, Marxist Theory, Post-Humanist Theory, Linguistics and Rhetorical Theory, 18th & 19th Century Philosophy and History of Thought. More broadly, it is concerned with the questions raised by these movements, and with constructing a dialogue both between theory and its history and between the disciplines or discourses that have contributed to contemporary theory.
Since the inception of its MA program in 1990, the Centre has been the preferred destination for students of excellent calibre from Canada and from abroad, and this tradition has continued at the doctoral level since the launching of the PhD program in 2002. Through its programs and the work of its accomplished Core Faculty from Arts and Humanities, Information & Media Studies, and Social Sciences, the Centre has successfully established itself as one of Western’s well recognized and celebrated research intensive graduate programs, one that has been successfully guided by the strength of cross-disciplinary collaboration.
The TALL laboratory provides the electronic and technical infrastructure essential to the pursuit of leading edge linguistics research in linguistics analysis, data collection and online data retrieval and research collaboration, while providing an excellent environment to foster the development of transferable technical skills in such areas as online database creation and management, statistical analysis and Geographical Information Systems including sophisticated computer applications.

Performance Studies Research Group |
The Performance Studies Research Group is an interdisciplinary body made up of more than twenty scholars - both faculty and graduate students - from across the university. We meet twice per term, organizing our gatherings around shared readings from current debates in performance-related disciplines, the presentation of research by members, and lectures by visiting or in-house speakers. While we do not adhere rigorously to the formal definition of "performance studies" emerging from the discipline's American school (developed by Richard Schechner et al, and maintained by such bodies as TDR and Performance Studies International), we come together in our common faith in what Diana Taylor calls performance's power to enact theory, and theory's power to perform "in the public sphere." Our definition of performance is as flexible as the scholars who number among us, and we always welcome new members |
