The following is a list of scholarships and awards to which students apply or are need-based. Applications can be accessed through the Office of the Registrar's website HERE.

Last updated: April 8, 2010

Any UWO administered scholarship/award/prize will be automatically applied to the recipient’s tuition account. Credit balances will be issued in the form of a cheque and mailed to the sessional address. Scholarship/award/prize recipients who withdraw after registration shall only be entitled to the value of the scholarship/award/prize as determined by the prorated cost of tuition calculated from the withdrawal date.

Progressive Association, London Lord Nelson Chapter Scholarship Awarded to the student who obtains the highest mark in Greek 1000. $200

Awarded to the student who obtains the highest mark in Classical Studies 3310F/G. $200

Department of Classical Studies Scholarship for Honors Double Major Second Year
Awarded to the full-time student registered in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities with the highest standing in Year 2 of an Honors Bachelor degree program that includes a Major in Classical Studies. The student must currently be enrolled in the Honors Bachelor degree and have an average in the Major in Classical Studies of at least 80%. Students must be registered in at least 2.0 or more Classical Studies courses at the 2000-level or above to be considered. The Department of Classical Studies will select the recipient. $200 (awarded in Fall)

Department of Classical Studies Scholarship for Honors Double Major Third Year
Awarded to the full-time student registered in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities with the highest standing in Year 3 of an Honors Bachelor degree program that includes a Major in Classical Studies. The student must currently be enrolled in the Honors Bachelor degree and have an average in the Major in Classical Studies of at least 80%. Students must be registered in at least 2.0 or more Classical Studies courses at the 2000-level or above to be considered. The Department of Classical Studies will select the recipient. $200 (awarded in Fall)

Department of Classical Studies Scholarship for Honors Second Year
Awarded to a full-time student enrolled in an Honors Specialization in Classical Studies module with the highest standing in 2nd year, provided that the student has at least an 80% average. The Department of Classical Studies will select the recipient. $500 (awarded in Fall)

Department of Classical Studies Scholarship for Honors Third Year
Awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the Honors Classical Studies or Honors Specialization in Classical Studies program with the highest standing in 3rd year, provided that the student has at least an 80% average. The Department of Classical Studies will select the recipient. $500 (awarded in Fall)

Department of Classical Studies Scholarship in Elementary Latin
Awarded to the student with the highest mark in Latin 1000, provided that the student has a grade of at least 80%. The Department of Classical Studies will select the recipient. $150 (awarded in Fall)

Department of Classical Studies Scholarship in Advanced Latin
Awarded to the student with the highest mark in Latin 2000, provided that the student has a grade of at least 80%. The Department of Classical Studies will select the recipient. $150 (awarded in Fall)

Eve Harp and Judith Wiley Classical Studies Travel Award [Graduate/Undergraduate]

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Community Scholarship
Awarded to the student who obtains the highest standing in Greek 2000. $200

Wilfred and Zeta O’Donnell Travelling Fellowship
Awarded to undergraduate students, either full or part-time, registered in the constituent University who have completed two years of an Honors BA with either an Honoros Specialization or double Major modules in the Departments of Classical Studies, French Studies or Modern Languages and Literatures. In order to apply, a student must have a minimum academic standing of 75% and must enroll in a course of study for which departmental approval has been received. Applications must be submitted by students prior to the last day of classes to the Chair of the department concerned.

$6,500 available annually, up to $2,000/student for study in Europe & up to $500/student for study in Quebec.

Helen M.B. Allison Gold Medal
Awarded to a student graduating in the Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature program from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Gold Medal (awarded in Spring)

Alumni Gold Medals
One medal will be awarded to a graduating student: 1) with an honors degree which contains an Honors Specialization in Chemistry or a Double Major in which one of the Majors is Chemistry; 2) with an honors Bachelor of Arts degree which contains a Major in English Language and Literature and a Major in French; 3) with an honors degree leading to a Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Arts with an Honors Specialization in Music; 4) in the Western-Fanshawe Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program; and 5) in the BScN program for Registered Nurses. (awarded in Spring) Gold Medals (5)

Baldwin Family Scholarships in English Language & Literature
Awarded to students entering the second year of an Honors Bachelor degree with either an Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature or a double Major including English Language and Literature who have achieved an average of at least 80% in their first year, and who will not be recipients of any other scholarship of $1,000 or above. $900 each (2) (awarded in Fall)

Dr. Betty Bandeen Undergraduate Award in English
Awarded in even years to a full-time undergraduate student in a four-year degree program pursuing an Honors Specialization, Specialization or Major in English Language and Literature, based on financial need and academic performance. Applications can be accessed through the Registrarial Services Web site and must be submitted by October 31. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities will select the recipient once financial need is determined by Registrarial Services. $1800 (even years)

Bounce Award
Awarded annually to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, based on academic achievement (minimum 80%) in a course in Restoration and Eighteenth-Century British Literature (period 1660-1780) and financial need. Applications can be accessed through the Registrarial Services Web site and must be submitted by October 31. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities will select the recipient once financial need is determined by Registrarial Services. $360

Kristin Brady Memorial Prize
Awarded to a top graduating student in Honours Specialization in English Language and Literature or Combined Honours Double Major including English, usually the student with highest standing in fourth-year English Honours courses. Adjudicated with reference to academic achievement and also financial need. Applications can be accessed online through the Office of the Registrar's website and must be submitted by October 31. Selection will be made by the Chair of the Department of English (or designate) in consultation with Financial Aid Services. $200 (awarded in Spring)

Archibald A. Campbell Scholarship (in Canadian Literature)
Awarded annually to the undergraduate student with the highest standing in a course in Canadian Literature offered by the Department of English. $200 (awarded in Spring)

Allan Gladstone Dow Scholarship
Awarded to a student registered in an English program in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities who has achieved a minimum of 80% academic average and demonstrated financial need. English-speaking Union of the Commonwealth of Canada, London & Western Ontario Branch (3)
Awarded to three full-time undergraduate students in Year 2 or higher, registered in an English module in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and who have written, in the current academic year, the most outstanding essays reflecting the dignity of the English language. $200, $100 & $50 Book Prizes & Honorary Memberships

Timothy Findley Memorial Scholarship (English and Film Studies)
Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student entering third-year and enrolled in a four-year degree program which includes an Honors Specialization, Specialization or Major in English Language and Literature or Film Studies, based on Academic performance (minimum 80%). Preference will be given to a student who has taken courses in Writing. The Scholarship and Award Committee in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities will select the recipient. $890

Amy & Elliott Grieve Undergraduate Award in English
Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student entering their second year and enrolled in a four-year degree program pursuing an Honors Specialization, Specialization or Major in English Language and Literature based on financial need and minimum 75% average in one of English 1020, English 1022, or English 1024. Applications can be accessed through the Registrarial Services' Web site and must be submitted by October 31. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities will select the recipient once financial need is determined by Registrarial Services. $1,000

Edward J. Izrael 125th Anniversary Alumni Award in English
Awarded to a full-time student in Year 2 or higher of a four-year degree program in English based on academic achievement (minimum 70% average) and financial need. Preference will be given to students in Year 2. Applications can be accessed through the Registrarial Services web site and must be submitted by October 31. The Office of the Registrar will determine financial need and the recipient will be selected by the Scholarship and Awards Committee in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities $625 (awarded in Fall)

Douglas & Cynthia Kneale 125th Anniversary Alumni Award in English
Awarded to a full-time student in Year 3 of an Honors Specialization or double Major in English Language and Literature based on academic achievement (minimum 70% average) and financial need. Applications can be accessed online through the Office of the Registrar web site and must be submitted by October 31. The Office of the Registrar will determine financial need and the Faculty of Arts Scholarships and Awards Committee will select the recipient.$500 (awarded in Fall)

Thomas F. McCracken Scholarship
Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student beyond Year 1 registered in English Language and Literature based on academic achievement (minimum 80% overall average). The recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in consultation with the Department of English. $1,900 (awarded in Fall)

John McEachern Scholarship
Awarded to the student in an Honors Bachelor degree with the highest standing in third year of a double Major in English Language and Literature and History, tenable in fourth year. $700 (awarded in Fall)

Roderick Moir McQueen Scholarship in English
Awarded to a full-time student in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities who is in third year of the Honors Specialization in English with a minimum average of 80%. The recipient will be eligible to continue receiving the scholarship in fourth year, providing that he or she maintains an academic average of 70% and has a full-time course load. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated interest in journalism. Applications will be available through the Department of English. The scholarship committee in the Department of English will select the recipient. $1,200 continuing for 2 years.
Students should submit a letter of application to the Chair of Undergraduate Studies by March 1. Must include verifiable evidence of an active interest in journalism.

Neen Hodgins Scholarships
1. Awarded annually to full-time undergraduate students entering the second year of a four year degree program and pursuing an Honors Specialization, Specialization, or Major in English with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities based on academic achievement (minimum B average), financial need and a demonstrated commitment to the study of English at Western. 5 @ $5,000

2. Awarded to first -year students who have excelled in their secondary school English course(s), have enrolled in English 1022, and demonstrate financial need as they enter their first year at Western. 5 @ $5,000
Applications available through the Office of the Registrar website. Deadline: October 31. As part of the application process, students must submit a 500 word essay outlining their aspirations and motivations in choosing to attend Western and pursue a degree in English. A selection committee of the Department of English will review all applications and select the award recipient once financial need has been determined by the Office of the Registrar.

K.P.R. Neville Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a student with an average of at least 80% who is entering second year of an Honors Bachelor degree with a double Major in English Language & Literature and French, English Language & Literature and German, or English Language & Literature and History. $300 (awarded in Fall)

Kathleen V. Pearce Scholarship
Awarded to the student proceeding to the third year of the honours English Language and Literature program with the highest standing in English honours courses in second year. $225

Alfred Poynt Award in Poetry
Awarded to full-time students in any undergradute degree program based on a submission of poetry that is original, titled, and previously unpublished. Poems must be in English and may use any style of poetry. Poems will be judged for their originality, and for their use of form and technique, traditional or contemporary, in a skillful and creative way to create or intensify themes or effects. The total entry is not to exceed 4 pages for a maximum of 150 lines and must be submitted to the Department of English by March 31. Further details regarding the format of submissions can be obtained from the Department of English. Recipients will be selected by a committee in the Department of English that will include at least one published writer from London and/or the University Community. $250

Audrey Brown Pritchard Award in English
Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in year 2 or higher who is pursuing a three or four-year Bachelor's degree with an Honors Specialization, Specialization or Major in English Language and Literature based on financial need and academic achievement (minimum 70% average). Preference will be given to female candidates from Southwestern Ontario, and Chatham-Kent in particular. Applications can be accessed online through the Office of the Registrar's Website and must be submitted by October 31. The Office of the Registrar will determine financial need and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities will select the recipient. 2 @ $2000 (awarded in Fall)

Rhoda Ann Rinn Scholarship in English Literature
Awarded on the basis of academic standing in the first-year Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences to a student who enrols in the second year of an Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature. The winner will be selected by the Scholarship Committee, on recommendation of the Department of English. The student selected must maintain at least an 80% average and remain in the Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature. Tenable in the constituent university only. $1,500 for three years (awarded in Fall)

Stanley Jay - Myrtle Rowntree Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to student in third year of an Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature based on academic achievement (minimum 80% average). The recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Scholarships and Awards Committee. $1,300 (awarded in Fall)

Gordon & Myrtle Stevenson Scholarship in English
Awarded to a full-time student in English based on academic achievement (minimum 80%) and financial need. Preference will be given to students who attended high school in a rural area. Applications can be accessed through the Office of the Registrar's website and must be completed by October 31. The recipient will be selected by the Scholarship and Awards Committee in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. $2,000 (awarded in Fall)

Gordon & Myrtle Stevenson OSOTF/OTSS Scholarship in English
Awarded to a full-time student in English based on academic achievement (minimum 80%) and financial need. Preference will be given to students who attended high school in a rural area. The recipient will be selected by the Scholarship and Awards Committee in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. $1,200 (awarded in Fall)

Mary R. Stewart Scholarship (also French)
Awarded to a student entering third year of an Honors Bachelor degree with a double Major in English Language and Literature and French, who achieved the highest academic average in second year. In the case of a tie, preference will be given to a female student. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities Scholarships and Awards Committee will select the recipient. $1,250 (awarded in Fall)

William Ferguson Tamblyn Scholarships
Awarded to two students entering fourth year of Honors English Language and Literature, who, on the recommendation of the Department of English, have shown the highest degree of academic excellence in English. 2 @ $1,500 (awarded in Fall)

William Ware Tamblyn Scholarship
Awarded to the student entering fourth year of Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature who, on the recommendation of the Department of English, has shown the highest degree of academic excellence in English. $1,500 (awarded in Fall)

Marguerite Torney Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time student entering Year 3 of an Honors Bachelor degree with either an Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature or a double Major including English Language and Literature who achieved the highest overall average in Year 2. The recipient will be selected by by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Scholarships and Awards Committee. $500 (awarded in Fall)

Frances Weir Gold Medal and Scholarship
Awarded to a student in an Honors Bachelor degree where preference is given to a student who meets the requirments for a double Major in English and History, however, consideration will be given to a student with an Honors Specialization in either English or History and a Major in the other subject. William Wyatt Scholarship in English Language & Literature
Awarded to the highest ranking student entering second year of an Honors Bachelor degree with either an Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature or a double Major including English Language and Literature. $350 (awarded in Fall)

Film Studies

Timothy Findley Memorial Scholarship (English and Film Studies)
Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student entering third-year and enrolled in a four-year degree program which includes an Honors Specialization, Specialization or Major in English Language and Literature or Film Studies, based on Academic performance (minimum 80%). Preference will be given to a student who has taken courses in Writing. The Scholarship and Award Committee in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities will select the recipient. $890

Warner Home Video Film Studies Award
Awarded to a student registered in third or fourth year of Film Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities based on academic achievement and demonstrated financial need. Applications can be accessed through the Office of the Registrar's website and must be completed by October 31. The recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Scholarships Committee. $600 (awarded in Fall)

French Studies

W.C.P. Baldwin and Lucile Baldwin Scholarships
Awarded to students in an Honors Bachelor degree entering their second year of an Honors Specialization in French Language & Literature, Linguistics & Literature, or French Language & Linguistics, or a double Major including French, who have achieved at least an 80% average at the end of first year, and who will not be recipients of any other scholarship of $1,000 or above. 2 @ $500 (awarded in Fall)

Catherine Mary Bowie Traveling Award
Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student entering third or fourth year of an Honors Bachelor degree in either an Honors Specialization in French Language and Literature or a double Major including French. Recipients must have a minimum academic average of 75%, and must enroll in a course of study for which departmental approval has been received.Applications can be obtained from the Department of French Studies and must be submitted by students prior to the last day of classes to the Chair of the Department. The recipient will be selected by the Department of French Studies. $2,500

Awarded to the undergraduate student achieving the highest standing in a course in French Canadian Literature offered by the Department of French Studies of the University of Western Ontario. $200 (awarded in Spring)

Tillie Jensen Eklund Continuing Award (awarded once every 3 years)
Awarded to the student in Year 2 of any four-year degree program in French based on academic achievement (minimum 70% average) and demonstrated financial need. This award will continue for Years 3 and 4 provided that the recipient maintains a full course load in a four-year degree program in French, maintains a 70% average and demonstrates financial need each year. Once the recipient completes the fourth year of his or her program or no longer qualifies, another recipient will be selected. Only one student can be in receipt of this award in any given year. Applications can be accessed online through the Office of the Registrar and must be submitted by October 31. The Office of the Registrar will select the recipient. $ 1,500, continuing for 3 years

Harriet Beatrice Freele Scholarship (also MLL)
Awarded to an outstanding student (minimum average 80%) entering the third year of either an Honors Specialization or Major offered by the Departments of French Studies or Modern Languages and Literatures. $1,000 (awarded in Fall)

Sir Wilfrid Laurier Memorial Prizes (2) (could be non-Arts)
Awarded annually to a Canadian Citizen (by birth or naturalization) whose native tongue is not French and who demonstrates a proficiency in French conversation. $250 & $200 (awarded in Spring)

Wilfred and Zeta O’Donnell Travelling Fellowship (also Classics and MLL)
Awarded to undergraduate students, either full or part-time, registered in the constituent University who have completed two years of an Honors BA with either an Honors Specialization or double Major modules in the Departments of Classical Studies, French Studies or Modern Languages and Literatures. In order to apply a student must have a minimum academic standing of 75% and must enroll in a course of study for which departmental approval has been received. Applications must be submitted by students prior to the last day of classes to the Chair of the department concerned.
$6,500 available annually, up to $2,000/student for study in Europe & up to $500/student for study in Quebec.

Sir Charles Edward Saunders–Mary Eileen Anderson Awards
Awarded to a student registered at the constituent University and entering the French Studies Department's third-year abroad program in France (Nice Exchange). A minimum average of 75% in French courses is required. 2 x $1,500
Awarded to a student entering the third-year at Laval program and who is eligible for, but not holding, a Turville Travelling Fellowship. A minimum average of 75% in French courses is required. $500

Sir Charles Edward Saunders–Mary Eileen Anderson Scholarship
Awarded to a student graduating in the Honors Specialization in French Language and Literature. $500 (awarded in Spring)

Stephanie Spinks French Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in any year beyond year one of a French program with a minimum 85% academic average. $1,000 (awarded in Fall)

Mary R. Stewart Scholarship (also English)
Awarded to a student entering third year of the combined Honors program in English and French, who achieved the highest academic average in second year. In the case of a tie, preference will be given to a female student. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities Scholarships and Awards Committee will select the recipient. $1,250 (awarded in Fall)

The Third Year in Nice Study Abroad Program
Awarded in September to full-time undergraduate students (from all Faculties in the Constituent University) who are participating in the Canadian Third Year in Nice Program during the year they recieve the award and who have maintained an average of at least 70% in the previous year. Awarded annually on a competitive basis to undergraduates registered in the constituent University who are entering the third or fourth year of an Honors Bachelor degree in either an Honors Specialization in French, German or Spanish; or a Double Major that includes a Major module in one or more of these subjects. Preference will be given to students studying French and to those who propose to teach French in elementary or secondary schools. Part-Time students will be eligible for the Fellowship, provided that they have completed the full second year of their Honors Specialization. Jenny Donald Memorial Award in Visual Arts
Awarded to the full-time student in third year of an Honors Specialization, Specialization, or Major offered through the Department of Visual Arts who excels in the two-dimensional arts: drawing, painting, photography, printmaking. Application information is available from the Department of Visual Arts. Candidates must provide images of work in the two-dimensional arts to the Department of Visual Arts by September 30. Gray Creative Arts Award in Visual Arts
Awarded to a full-time student completing their third year of a Visual Arts Degree program who excels in one of the following areas: 1) two-dimensional art (drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, etc.); 2) three-dimensional art (sculpture, holography, performance); 3) time-based art (video, sound). The award will rotate among the identified areas so that each area is represented at least once within a five-year period. Third-year students are invited to apply by January 31. Students are to provide between five and eight images of work in the medium to which the award is directed that year. Additionally, applicants will submit a proposal describing their work in the year ahead, including an objective and a CV. The selection committee will be comprised of the Chair of Visual Arts, one faculty member in the Department of Visual Arts and another art professional, i.e., curator at the McIntosh Gallery or a community artist. $2,000

Bess A. Hewitt Scholarship in Visual Arts
Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in Year 3 of the Honors Specialization in Studio Arts in the Visual Arts degree program, Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Candidates must have achieved a minimum of 80% modular average in their previous year of studies and demonstrated artistic excellence in their portfolio. Portfolios must be submitted to the Visual Arts Department office by March 31. The recipient will be chosen by an awards committee within the Visual Arts department (composed of the Chair and two other members) $1,000

Richard Ivey Foundation Continuing Awards in Visual Arts
Awarded to students who are entering second year studies who have a minimum 75% average in principal courses, are registered in an honors program in the Department of Visual Arts and demonstrate financial need. In order to retain these awards, students must continue to demonstrate financial need and must maintain at least a 75% average in principal courses in each of years two and three with continued registration in an honors program in the Department of Visual Arts. Applications can be accessed through the Office of the Registrar's web site and must be submitted by October 31st. Awarded annually to full-time undergraduate students entering their 1st year of study who are pursuing an Honors Specialization in Studio Arts in Arts and Humanities, based on academic achievement and demonstrated financial need. This award will continue provided the recipients maintain an average of 75%, a full-time course load, and continue to demonstrate financial need each year. Madeline Lennon Essay Award
Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in year 3 or 4 of a BA in Honors Specialization Art History and Criticism or a Major in Art History who is judged to have the best essay on Art History. Essay regulations will be advertised and posted through the Visual Arts departmental office, with an annual due date of January 31. The winning essay will be chosen by a representative committee of faculty to be appointed by the Chair of Visual Arts. $1,000

Margaret Rand Memorial Award in Visual Arts
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student (minimum 3 courses) in year 2 or beyond of an Honors Bachelor degree with an Honors Specialization or double Major in Visual Arts; a four year Bachelors degree with a Specialization or Major in Visual Arts; or, a three year Bachelors degree with a Major or double Minor in Visual Arts. Candidates must have achieved an 80% average in their last full year of study (5 courses or equivalent taken part-time) and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to candidates who registered at Western as mature students and who can demonstrate a plan to continue their work in Visual Arts personally or professionally. Peter J. Thomson 125th Anniversary Alumni Award
Awarded to a full-time student in Year 2 of an Honors Bachelors degree or a 4-year Bachelors degree offered by the Department of Visual Arts based on academic achievement (minimum 70% average) and financial need. Recipients will continue receiving this award in Year 3 and Year 4 provided that they continue to meet the award criteria. Once the current recipient no longer qualifies, a new Year 2 student will be chosen. Kay MacIver Memorial Award
Awarded to a student in third year in an Honors Bachelor degree with either an Honors Specialization or a double Major in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities who enrolled in at least 5.0 courses and is progressing from year three to year four. Preference would be given to a student with an interest in the field of communications, and who has demonstrated high ideals and broad interests through a significant performance in extracurricular music, theatre, the arts, student government, service to society, or athletics. This award was established in memory of Kay MacIver by family, friends, and CBC colleagues as a tribute to a remarkable woman, whose warmth and breadth of character, talents and achievements enriched the lives of those who knew and worked with her over her long career in the CBC. Kay MacIver was an alumnus of Western and a distinguished broadcaster. 1 @ $2,000

Rogers Family Awards in Arts
Available to full time students registered in the third year of study in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at The University of Western Ontario based on academic achievement in Year 2. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated the greatest increase in their annual academic average between the first year of university study and completion of the second year of university. Candidates must also demonstrate an aptitude for creative and innovative thought, exceptional achievement in extracurricular activities and commitment to active citizenship. Awarded annually to undergraduate students in the following four divisions of the Writing Program:

Western Alumni “Go Global” Awards in Arts
Awarded annually on a competitive basis to full time undergraduate students registered in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities who have been selected to participate on an official UWO International Exchange. Preference will be given to students going on exchange for a full academic year. Applicants for this award will be evaluated on excellence in their academic record, demonstrated extra-curricular involvement and an essay. Recipients will be chosen by a committee consisting of the University Exchange Coordinator and the Dean or designate of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Earl Arscott Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to students entering the final year of any three-year or four year BA program in each of the Faculties of Arts and Humanities, Health Sciences (Kinesiology only), Music, Science, Social Science with an average of at least 80%. $300-one for each Faculty (awarded in Fall)

Avie Bennett Prize in Canadian Literature
Awarded annually for the best essay written by an undergraduate student registered in a Canadian Literature course at the Constituent University. Every year instructors of Canadian literature courses will be invited to recommend the best essay submitted for credit within the current academic year. The essays must be submitted for adjudication by April 30. The Chair of the Department of English will name a panel of three Canadian literature specialists to review the submissions and, within three weeks of the submission deadline, select the recipient. $500 plus a complete set of The New Canadian Library (awarded in Spring)

Canadian Robert T. Jones, Jr. Scholarships
Awarded to undergraduates who are eligible to enter the third (Junior) year of a participating honors program in Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Social Science, and Science, at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and have obtained a minimum academic average of 80%. Application deadline is January 24 to the Dean’s Office, Faculty of Social Science. $6,000 each

Marguerite R. Dow Canadian Heritage Writing Award
Awarded to a Canadian citizen or permanent resident registered in any undergraduate or graduate program at Western who submits, in English or French, any personal and recent work of creative writing, in any genre or length, on a theme of Canadian Heritage, that has not so far been published or entered in any other competition. Application should be directed to the Associate Dean of Arts and Humanities by February 15. up to $1,000

Lisa Gilmer Memorial Award
Awarded annually, on a non-academic basis, to an undergraduate student who is registered in Year 2 or 3 in Arts and Humanities or Social Science, who is not in his or her final year of study, and who demonstrates involvement with student life either on or off campus. Preference will be given to applicants who are active participants in the University Students’ Council as a counsellor, commissioner, committee member, or a writer for one of the campus newspapers (The Gazette or The Western News). However, students who have demonstrated a strong desire and willingness to get involved in student life will also be considered. Applications are available in the Office of the Registrar and must be submitted by February 28. The recipient will be selected in May and the award will be given upon registration in the Fall. Nominations for appropriate candidates are also encouraged. From $1,500 to $1,800

Lillian Kroll Prize in Creative Writing
Awarded competitively to an undergraduate student (including students at the affiliated colleges) who exhibits a developing talent for creative writing on the basis of a portfolio of submitted writings (prose, fiction, poetry or drama) that has not so far been published or won an award in any other competition. Tenable once. Application should be directed to the Department of English by February 1. $250

Memorial Scholarship
Awarded each year to 1 student in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and 1 student in the Faculty of Social Science. Candidates must be in Year 2 or higher, achieve a minimum 80% academic average and not already be receiving another scholarship. 2 @ $1,250 (awarded in Fall)

Millenium Excellence Award, Canada Millenium Scholarship Foundation
The Canada Millennium Scholarships Program was replaced by the Canada Student Grants Program starting in the 2009-2010 academic year. A transition grant was made available for eligible recipients of the Millennium Bursary to provide non-repayable funding for up to three additional years of undergraduate study. The federal government will also continue to provide funding for eligible recipients of the Millennium Excellence Award until 2013.

Archibald A. Campbell Scholarship (in French Canadian Literature)
Awarded to the undergraduate student achieving the highest standing in a course in French Canadian Literature offered by the Department of French Studies of the University of Western Ontario. $200 (awarded in Spring)

Dean's Entrance Scholarship
Awarded to full-time students entering a Masters or Doctoral program in Arts and Humanities. Students must have a minimum admission average of 80%. Graduate chairs in each program will select recipients of the award. Number of scholarships determined annually by the Dean. $2,000 each.

Faculty of Arts and Humanities Alumni Graduate Awards
Awarded to graduate students registered in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and enrolled in any graduate program in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities who can demonstrate financial need and are maintaining a minimum 78% average. The awards will be used to support graduate travel and research. Applicants must supply a project description and a detailed budget. Recipients will be selected by the Dean of Arts and Humanities upon consultation with a committee. Completed applications must be submitted by January 8. Recipients must meet OSOTF eligibility requirements. Number and value of awards may vary. Up to $9,000 will be available, with no single award to exceed $1,000

Faculty of Arts and Humanities Chair's Entrance Scholarship
Awarded to a student entering a Masters or Doctoral program in Arts and Humanities. Students must have a minimum admission average of 80%. Graduate chairs in each program will select recipients of the award. The number of scholarships will be determined annually by the individual Department Chairs. up to $2,000 each.

Faculty of Arts and Humanities Chancellor's Entrance Scholarship
Awarded to full-time students entering a Doctoral program in Arts and Humanities. Students must have a minimum admission average of 80%. Graduate chairs in each program will select recipients of the award. The number of scholarships will be determined annually by the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities. $8,000 each

Dr. Betty Bandeen Graduate Award in English
Awarded in odd years to a full-time graduate student in a Masters or Doctoral program in English, based on financial need and academic performance (minimum 78% average). Applications can be obtained from the Department of English and must be submitted by October 31. A committee in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, with representation by a current member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, will select the recipient. $1,800 (odd years)

Jose Luis Barrio-Garray Bursaries in Visual Arts
Awarded annually to graduate students in the Department of Visual Arts who have demonstrated financial need. One award will be available for a student pursuing a Master of Arts History and one will be available to a student pursuing a Master of Fine Art in Studio. In the event that no student qualifies for one of the awards, the funds will automatically be given to a qualified student from the other specified area. 2 @ $1000 or 1 @2000

Graduate Thesis Research Awards Fund (Research Office)
Support costs of research undertaken by full-time graduate students enrolled in a graduate program leading to a research degree. Applicants must be engaged in writing a thesis/dissertation as a part of their degree requirements. Completed applications must be submitted by November 15 to the Dean's Office. Recipients will be selected by the Dean of Arts and Humanities upon consultation with a committee. $7,500 budgeted with a max $1,500 per award

Eve Harp & Judith Wiley Classical Studies Travel Award
Awarded annually based on academic achievement to a graduate student or undergraduate student in Classical Studies, to assist with travel costs for research at libraries or sites anywhere in the world, but especially Greece or Italy. Preference will be given to graduate students, but faculty are eligible, too. The recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Scholarship Committee in consultation with the Graduate Chair of Classical Studies. Number of awards will vary – approx. $750 each (awarded in Fall)

Dr. George Edward Hall Ontario Graduate Scholarship
Awarded to a graduate student studying Philosophy of Science at the Masters or Doctoral level who is a current holder of an Ontario Graduate Scholarship based on academic achievement (minimum 78%) and research merit. SGPS will select the recipient in consultation with the Chair of Philosophy. $5,000

Richard A. Harshman Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a PhD student (part-time or full-time) based on academic achievement (minimum average 78%). To be eligible a student must be in year 2 or more of a PhD program and be undertaking research in Statistical Methods or the Philosophy of Science. Candidates may apply through the Graduate Affairs Committee in either the Psychology Department or the Philosophy Department by submitting the CV and a 1-page statement describing their research and relevant achievements, including publications. A committee with representation from the Psychology Dept. or the Philosophy Dept., with at least one member who is a current member of SGPS, will select the recipient. Award recipients are eligible to receive this scholarship once during the academic career at Western. $1,000

Dr. Allison Heartz Johnson Ontario Graduate Scholarship
Awarded to a graduate student studying Philosophy of Science at the Masters or Doctoral level who is a current holder of an Ontario Graduate Scholarship based on academic achievement (minimum 78%) and research merit. SGPS will select the recipient in consultation with the Chair of Philosophy. $5,000

Harold Johnson Memorial Scholarship in Mediaeval Philosophy
Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in Philosophy or a full-time graduate student in a Masters or Doctoral program in Philosophy based on academic achievement (Minimum 80% academic average), to enable the recipient to attend the International Mediaeval Congress. A committee appointed by the Chair of the Department of Philosophy will select the recipient. $800 (awarded in Fall)

Sara Marie Jones Memorial Scholarship in English
Awarded annually to a first year Ph.D. student based on academic achievement (minimum 80% academic average). Students must submit one essay, which may be new material or previously written material for a course to the Graduate Program Office in English. The awards selection committee in the Department of English, with at least one representative who is a member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, will select the recipient. $325

Henry White Kinnear Foundation Ontario Graduate Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time graduate student studying in Arts an dHumaniteis at the Masters or Doctoral level who is a current holder of an Ontario Graduate Scholarship based on academic achievement (minimum 78%) and research merit. SGPS will select the recipients in consultation with Arts and Humanities. $5,000

Carl F. and Margaret E. Klinck Scholarship in English
Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department of English to a PhD candidate in the fourth year of study or beyond who is producing an original and outstanding PhD thesis (historical and/or critical) on Canadian Literature in English. The award is tenable once only. $2,000

(W. & J.G.) McIntosh Prize in Canadian Literature
Awarded each year to the student in the fourth year of the PhD program who delivers the best paper based on material from the PhD dissertation. Up to $900

President's Entrance Scholarship
Awarded to full-time students entering a Doctoral program in Arts and Humanities. Students must have a minimum admission average of 80%. Graduate chairs in each program will select recipients of the award. Number of Scholarships determined by the Dean: $6,000 each

Provost's Entrance Scholarship
Awarded to full-time students entering a Doctoral program in Arts and Humanities. Students must have a minimum admission average of 80%. Graduate chairs in each program will select recipients of the award. Number of Scholarships determined by the Dean: $4,000 each

Randall Graduate Research and Travel Award in French
Awarded to a full-time graduate student in year 3 or beyond of a PhD in French based on academic achievement (minimum 78% average), satisfactory progression in the program and participation in a valid research project. Candidates will submit a research project, a detailed budget , a cv and a letter of support from the thesis director to the Department of French Studies by February 1. The recipient will be selected by the Graduate Studies Committee, in the Department of French Studies, of which at least one person holds membership in the School of Graduate and Post-doctoral Studies. Students may apply for both the Mary Routledge Fellowships and the Randall Graduate Award in French but will not be eligible to receive both awards in the same competition year. Rotman Institute of Philosophy Doctoral Entrance Scholarship
The Rotman Institute of Philosophy will award up to two scholarships annually to full-time students entering the Doctoral Program in the Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Students with demonstrated academic excellence and a stated research interest in philosophy and science (including epistemology, ethics or history of science) are eligible. The recipients will become members of the Rotman Institute of Philosophy. Recipients will be selected by the Graduate Chair of the program and the Director of the Rotman Institute of Philosophy. Up to 2 @ $10,000 each

Mary Routledge Fellowships
Awarded to full-time graduate students registered in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in a graduate program based in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. These Fellowships will be awarded to graduate students in order to cover expenses incurred as a result of a need to consult archival material off campus, or to otherwise travel in the context of their research. Candidates must have maintained a minimum A- average and exhibit research ability or potential. Selection will be made by the Dean of Arts and Humanities in consultation with the graduate Chairs in all Arts and Humanities Departments. Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of applications to be submitted to the Office of the Dean of Arts and Humanities no later than January 8 of any calendar year. A total of $6,000 available annually. The numbers and amounts of awards will vary with the applications in any given year. Funds not awarded in one year will be carried over to the next cycle of applications.

Sir Charles Edward Saunders-Mary Eileen Anderson Scholarships in French
Awarded annually to an outstanding student who is either entering or continuing in the MA and PhD program (one for each program) and who will not be a recipient of a major award (i.e., over $500, other than a Teaching Assistantship and Special University Scholarship.) $700

Lynne-Lionel Scott Fellowship in Canadian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
Awarded to a graduate student registered full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, enrolled in a Graduate Program witin the Faculty of Arts and Humanities with a demonstrated interest in Canadian studies and a minimum 78% average. Doctoral candidates have priority, but Masters candidates are also eligible. Continuing graduate students with an interest in Canadian studies are automatically considered, as well as applicants for admission who indicate a primary interest in Canadian studies and whose applications are complete by January 8 of each year. The recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities on the recommendation from a selection committee. $2,500

Graham and Gale Wright Ontario Graduate Scholarships
The Graham and Gale Wright Ontario Graduate Scholarships will support masters or doctoral students conducting research in Arts and Humanities. All OGS scholarships are awarded by the Province of Ontario on the basis of academic achievement and research potential. 4 @ $5000

Bursary Applications are available September 1 from Financial Aid and are due back by October 31. Most bursaries are awarded in the 2nd term in January and February by the Registrar's Office. Awarded to a student enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities with a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to female students. $450

Geoffrey K. Caldwell 125th Anniversary Alumni Bursary
Awarded to a full-time student in any year beyond year one in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities based on financial need. $375

Lloyd E. Carter Bursary
Awarded to a full-time second, third, or fourth year student registered in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. $250

Godsoe Family Bursary
Awarded annually to a student registered in the Faculty of Social Science or the Faculty of Arts and Humanities who has strong academic standing and a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student who is taking courses with the Departments of Economics, History and Philosophy and who is registered at main campus, however is taking one course at Huron College. $3,000

Awarded to an Arts and Humanities student entering his/her graduating year who has demonstrated financial need. $350

International Services of London Inc. Bursaries
Awarded to a student with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Tenable at Western and its affiliated colleges. $750 each (3)

Earl H. Orser Bursaries
Awarded to any student who has demonstrated financial need who is progressing satisfactorily. Preferences will be given to a student enrolled in either of the Faculties of Arts and Humanities or Social Science. Up to $600

Terry Pether Memorial OSOTF Bursary

Laura Simon Memorial Bursary Fund
Awarded to any student in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities who demonstrates financial need. Preference will be given to a student with an interest in Visual Arts who is enrolled in courses such as art history, film appreciation, studio or computer art. $1,500
