Exclusion Housing

Exclusion Mice

Most mice in exclusion housing are held in ventilated racks.  These racks provide good protection for the animals provided procedures are followed.  Each cage on a ventilated rack act as an animal room.  The air flow is high at around 70 air changes an hour.

Under some circumstances mice might be housed in static micro-isolators.

Mice are all housed under sterile conditions.  All caging components are autoclaved by designated Animal Care staff.  This includes water, feed, bedding & environmental enrichment devices.

Cages must only be opened in Biological Safety Cabinets under HEPA-filtered laminar flow.  Specialized training is required prior to security access to this area.

Dress requirements are stringent and procedures must be strictly followed.  In order to obtain access you will be required to read SOP's and attend a training session.

Cage bottoms, water bottles and sipper tubes are cleaned weekly, wire lids are cleaned monthly.  Please leave dirty cages in the animal room. The schedule for changing will depend on the location.  Check with the manager or lead-hand for additional information.

Exclusion Housing of Other Animals

Please contact the facility manager or lead-hand if you wish to house animals other than mice in an exclusion setting.

Inclusion Housing

Inclusion Mice

Mice housed in the inclusion facility are housed in static micro-isolator cages.  Either shoebox or colony cages are available. All cages, bedding and water are autoclaved.  Cages may only be opened under a HEPA filtered laminar flow unit using approved techniques.

The standard diet is Harlan Irradiated rodent diet.

The bedding used in these cages is Alpha-chip as seen in the micro-isolator cage above.  See Conventional Housing - Mice & Rats for a description of this product.

The schedule for changing will depend on the location.  Check with the manager or lead-hand for additional information.

Entry into the inclusion facility is restricted to individuals who need access to animals.  Dress requirements are stringent.

You must immediately exit  the HSACF once you exit the rodent inclusion facility.

(Do not return to the facility until the following day, following a shower and change of clothers.)

Inclusion Housing of Other Animals

HSACF  can provide inclusion housing for other species in open cages or pens.  Please contact the manger to discuss your specific requirements.

Other Containment Housing

For specialized containment housing not outlined on this page, please contact the facility manager.
