Laird Laboratory Facilities
The Laird laboratory occupies over 1000 square feet and is fully equipped to perform all aspects of Cell and Molecular Biology. In addition to the primary laboratory and tissue culture room, laboratory personnel have direct privileges to a wide variety of Core instruments and facilities as outlined below.
Zeiss Multi-Photon Confocal Microscope
 |
The Zeiss Multi-Photon LSM 510 META confocal microscope system allows quantification of two or more fluorescently tagged connexins simultaneously in the same living cell. This system is also equipped with environmental stage, ideal for live cell imaging. |
Microinjection and Digital Image Processing
 |
In 2003, we also purchased an Inverted Leica epifluorescent microscope equipped with an Eppendorf pressure microinjection system and OpenLab software. This system will allow sophisticated quantification of dye transfer as an index of gap junctional intercellular communication |
Double Patch Clamp Electrophysiology Rig
 |
In 2002, Dr. Donglin Bai was recruited to the Gap Junction Group and through new funding established an Electrophysiology Core adjacent to our laboratory. This new facility will allow sophisticated gap junction channel analysis to be performed on both wild-type and mutant connexins.

Cryostat and Tissue Sectioning
 |
The cryostat is ideal for histology and provides for faster and safer sectioning with an optimized cooling system, rapid specimen freezing, and smooth specimen orientation- an ideal setup for high-quality sectioning demanded in routine histology and pathology. |
Li-Cor System
 |
Our Li-Cor Odyssey western blot imaging system performs quantitative, simultaneous two-color multiplexed western blot detection
