Time:              Monday-Friday, MAY - August, 9am-12 noon

Course Description:

This 4 week rotation will have the Radiology PGY1 residents working together as a team, and alongside MSc Clinical Anatomy students from the Dept of Anatomy& Cell Biology.  There may be residents from other PGY programs present as well.  Residents will spend time dissecting cadavers and working with prosections, depending on resource availability each year.  The residents may work on the various body areas (Thorax, Abd, Pelvis, Upper Limb, Lower Limb, Spine, Head and Neck, Face) to the extent they wish.

In working alongside anatomy students, the Radiology Residents will benefit from the anatomy students’ strengths in detailed anatomy.  The Radiology residents, in turn, will share their knowledge of imaging anatomy in the following ways:

  • in real time during dissection, by correlating cadaveric/prosection anatomy with medical illustration (e.g. Grant’s / Netter) or imaging anatomy (e.g. Xray for chest/skeletal, MR for muscle/joint/CNS, CT for chest/bone/abd/pelvis)
  • weekly presentation to the MSc Clinical Anatomy team re: selected topics
  • development of learning modules that can remain within the  Dept of Anatomy&Cell Biology AND go with residents as part of developing a “Teaching Dossier”.  Format of this can include .ppt slides/posters in electronic format.  Residents will coordinate with Anatomy Faculty re: this format.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
MEDICAL EXPERT/CLINICAL DECISION-MAKER:

  • Correlate gross anatomy with imaging anatomy, including congenital and anatomic variations
  • canmeds
  • Review anatomy pertinent to diagnostic radiology, with emphasis on the following areas:
    • Neuroanatomy, including head and neck (includes face, skull base, cranial nerves)
    • Thorax, including heart, lung and mediastinal spaces
    • Abdomen/pelvis, including peritoneal and extraperitoneal spaces, organs
    • Extremities, including muscle compartments, course of neurovascular bundles, muscle origins/insertions, ligaments
    • COLLABORATOR:

    • Work with Residents in daily dissection / prosection to optimize learning for all
    • HEALTH ADVOCATE:

    •  Abide by the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology’s policy of treating all material in the department including deceased individuals in the cadaver lab with the utmost dignity and respect

    • PROFESSIONAL:

    • Behave in a professional manner (punctual, courteous, diligent, helpful)
    • Attend to designated duties unless time off has been prospectively approved (ie. vacation, professional leave)

    • SCHOLAR:

    • Contribute to the learning of others, with teaching of other students/residents while on rotation
    • Develop Anatomy learning modules for benefit of Anatomy and Radiology learners

      Evaluation: 80% attendance and completion of dissection and weekly presentations
      Based on:
      -  daily performance with input from Anatomy faculty and students
      -  presentations made weekly
      -  ITER at end of rotation.

      Students must maintain an overall 80% in the course (see student handbook http://www.uwo.ca/anatomy/grad/studenthandbook_2010november18.pdf) and all components of the course must be completed to pass and for progression in the program.

      Students are expected to attend the specified lab and presentation sessions.  If a student must be absent from regularly scheduled presentations he/she is expected to contact the course instructor or coordinator and excuse himself/herself.  A student requiring academic accommodation due to illness, should use the Student Medical Certificate when visiting an off-campus medical facility or request a Record's Release Form (located in the Dean's Office) for visits to Student Health Services.

      • Documentation for medical or non-medical reasons, according to the Policy on

      Accommodation for Medical Illness is required for absences from tests.  Documentation is not required for work or attendance worth less than 10% of the total course grade. When documentation is required for missing a presentation evaluation, such documentation must be submitted by the student directly to the instructor.

      • The date and nature of a make-up presentation will be determined by the instructor, in consultation with the student
