Graduate Course 9561

Clinical Mammalian Histology

Course Outline and Schedule 2011/2012

Course Description:

This course is a survey course of mammalian histology with emphasis on teaching and clinical applications relevant to health care professionals. The course expects and highly encourages student participation and uses tutorial-style microscopic exploration and demonstrations of histologically sectioned material using a Virtual Slide Box (VSB).
Students are expected to come to each tutorial prepared as follows:

  • review the topic of the week by reading suggested texts and online notes provided on WebCt
  • using the VSB, explore the digital images of the sections to be studied that week
  • be prepared to present a clinical application of the histology covered

At the beginning of class each week one student will be asked to present a short vignette (2-3 minutes max). These vignettes may be based, or expanded, on clinical application highlights in the text of your choice.

Recommended Text:

  • Netter’s Histology, 2008, Ovalle and Nahirney, Elsevier, ISBN: 978-1-929007-86-8
  • Histology and Cell Biology, 2007, Kierszenbaum, Mosby, ISBN: 978-0-323-04527-8

These texts have online student consult sites that may be useful for studying.

Note: If you already have a histology text there is no need to purchase the recommended texts. Any other histology text is acceptable as well.
