His current research interests examine foreign direct investment of Japanese multinational enterprises in Africa. It considers the reasons for the exit, as well as the specific challenges associated with doing business in conflict zones.

In 2010 Paul Beamish founded the 39 Country Initiative (39CI). This initiative seeks to reduce poverty by enhancing the quality of the business education in the world’s poorest* 39 countries. The initiative is rooted in the idea that well-educated managers and entrepreneurs capable of making sound business decisions will increase the prosperity of the communities and countries in which they operate. To enable this, the 39CI strives to address one of the greatest challenges faced by higher educational institutions in the 39 countries: An overall lack of quality teaching material, particularly current material.

To this end, the 39CI in collaboration with Ivey Publishing has made the entire Ivey case catalog (7000 digital cases) available to registered faculty in each of the 39 countries free of charge. To-date, over 2000 faculty representing all 39 countries have registered for access. In addition, the 39CI organizes the collection of hard copy teaching materials and journals from universities around the world and ships them to schools in the 39 countries. Thus far, the 39CI has completed four container shipments arrivingat:Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (Ghana), Moi University (Kenya), and Riara University (Kenya).
