Staff Tributes to Nancy Ecclestone

New tributes will be added to this section regularly as they come in from CCAA staff, partners and collaborators over the next several weeks.

A Knowledge Mobilization Pioneer

I remember the day like it was yesterday- November 1993 I arranged a meeting with Nancy as I knew I was destined to work in the field of physical activity and aging.
Nancy took the time to meet with me and offered me a volunteer project to work on. After a short 3 month volunteering on this project she hired me as the project coordinator for the Functional Fitness for Older Adults research study – my first project at the CCAA.

Nancy was instrumental in my professional growth and often challenged me with a variety of projects and situations that have helped me to become the person that I am. Nancy provided me with a wealth of opportunities to meet with various community partners to gain a better understanding of the physical activity needs of older people. She often reminded me that it was essential to keep our efforts at the grassroots level to remind ourselves of the impact of the work we were involved with and to always seek opportunities to be creative, innovative and resourceful. To put into action the research that we were involved with beyond the project phase.

She was a pioneer of “Knowledge Mobilization” before the term was even coined.
Nancy inspired me with her work ethic and her ability to balance her work – life relationships. Nancy was a very caring and hard working woman. Her determination and drive set her apart from other leaders of her day.

I will forever be grateful for the opportunities Nancy provided me and am thankful to have so many wonderful memories that I will forever cherish.

An Challenger and Supporter

As soon as I started working as an instructor at the CCAA, Nancy was in the CCAA class that I taught.  She challenged me slightly to ensure I knew my stuff but afterwards was very supportive and encouraging about pursuing other aspects of the CCAA during my placement that was starting around the same time.  She definitely enhanced the student experience well before Western even promoted that and they offer the best student experience.  I am thankful that I was able to met early on a strong and committed member of the CCAA team.
