Recommendations for Website Development and Maintenance

The development and maintenance of Western Official Web Sites may be undertaken by a member or members of a department or contracted to a Web Site Developer. In a number of cases, the development is contracted out and the maintenance is handled within the unit. In any of these arrangements, it is important to follow the recommendations below.

Before development begins:

  1. Consider using the template provided by Communications & Public Affairs.
  2. Read the information at the Western Web Resource Centre and especially The Guide for Western Web Information Providers.
  3. Review the Disability Issues for Barrier Free Web Design.

During development:

  1. Document fully all information regarding the site.
  2. Prepare a site map.
  3. Prepare a copy of the file structure.

Moving from development to maintenance:

  1. Provide a complete site map, especially when the maintenance is being passed on or shared.
  2. Provide a hardcopy of the file structure.
  3. External developers should take the time to explain fully the structure of the site and its navigation to anyone who will be taking over the maintenance of the site.
